What's new

Utah Jazz Media Day (live stream)

Keyonte looks more bulked up. He did some work on his body.
Walker says he'll be "frustrated" if the contract extension doesn't happen, says he'll be dedicated to Utah for however long he's here.

I mean, sorta. His position makes sense, and he's expressing himself openly and with honesty. That's all good.

Yeah, just kind of depends on what he's asking for. If he's frustrated he didn't get a max offer from the Jazz, then that's not great. If he was willing to sign something reasonable and the Jazz valued their capspace next summer more than locking him in long term, that's understandable.

Locke had a hypothetical the other day that I think was actually really where things are. Said essentially Jazz would do something around 15M because it doesn't change flexibility but would probably come up to 20. Then said maybe Walker's starting point in the negotiation is like 30M.

To me it feels like you could get to 25ish with some added incentives pretty easily but maybe the Jazz are looking for a steal. The cap space next year argument is sus to me.

Danny isnt going to give up his ability to "big game hunt" even if the chances of that hunt being fruitful are very low.

Walker's value is 5/150 and he should get a premium for being a good soldier and throwing those games, this is very stupid.

I don't understand asking Walker to stain his career like this and then not rewarding it.

Nic Claxton got 4/100 with a smaller cap and without being asked to throw games, what is Locke smoking.

Going big game hunting in next years FA market is like hunting elephants in Nebraska.

Head coach Will Hardy has Kessler in his plans for the 2025-26 season. When asked about the team’s defense, Hardy listed Kessler as a player who could stand to improve, though.

“Walker has a great shot blocking mentality, but I need, and we need, his overall defensive nature to improve. It’s not about being a great shot blocker, it’s about being a great defensive player, and those two things can be different,” Hardy said. “I think Walker has shown signs of being an elite defender in our league, but it needs to take a step up, and the perimeter players need to get on board with that.”

Just trade him or change your scheme, he's an elite shot blocker who can't do anything else, lol.

Stop leaving guys open for three to cut off penetration if you're going to have an elite shot blocker with so so mobility.

Not sure I can jive with Hardy putting Kessler's name out there like that when the extension talks have hit a standstill. Probably better to leave his name out of the answer. And since the lion's share of the problems with the defense are not Kessler-related, he had ample opportunity to do so.

FWIW, listening to it live and I think he just handled the question poorly. He started the question off by talking about guarding the perimeter, but seemed to be hesitant to call anybody out specifically. Then his mind kind of shifted to "well, everybody even our best defensive player needs to play better". Since Kessler is obviously our best defensive player it made sense (in his mind) to call him out. I'm sure he wasn't even thinking about contract negotiation stuff.

I can see the Jazz wanting to see Walker have another good season and take another step before giving him $25k-$30k/year. Letting him get to restricted free agency will let another team dictate things like years and a player option. So the Jazz must be willing to potentially concede those things.
