Utah Trade Deadline Discussion

Cleveland was rumored as wanting Howard. Charlotte getting Hernangomez could be precursor to that deal. Could Utah be a third party?
There is zero evidence for that, so probably!

Just a reminder of the stacked 2018/19 Free Agency Class:

Unrestricted Free Agents
Point Guards
Shooting Guards
Small Forwards
Power Forwards
Centers
Why? Why is it that every freaking year we have people thinking that the big names are going to sign in Utah? It NEVER happens, so just stop expecting it. The deals we can make are overpaying for a mid tier dude. Or getting bargain bin players like Thabo and Jerebko. The franchise savior will not be a free agent acquisition. So just set yourself up for that disappointment now.

Paying $17Mil/yr for Fournier are the moves that have you in perpetual rebuilds.

Im arguing the opposite if you cared to read.

No half measures.
If you really want the Jazz to sign a decent free agent, overpaying for someone like Fournier is literally the only kind of move they can make. They have to beat the market and have no shot at the big guys. So decide your stance on stuff like this now, and stop contradicting yourself.

Deciding on your basketball team's construct is like finishing a term paper. Most people wait til the last moment. Deciding on Hood is like turning your paper in a week early. Trading Hood and deciding on Rubio in 2019 gives you an extra week of procrastination.
Well put.

Go on then. Tell me about it. Make sure it's not just you trying to argue something that you already believe instead of looking at it objectively, though.
Like I said, I've already done this and don't feel like retreading it fully on my phone.

But tldr, Fournier's role is much simpler and geared towards looking better analytically and Fournier had the benefit of continuity in Orlando basically having the same roster as the previous year.

I'm surprised people think this is a shocking take. Why do you guys think Favs is on the market to begin with? He thinks he's a starter and he's too expensive at a position the Jazz already have covered.
Not sure if this is a response to me or not but I'm agreeing with what you said.

The thing that gives me pause on trading Rodney is the deal Lou got. If the market is that cool on wing players there's a chance Hood can't get a very nice deal in FA. Hood on a bargain deal is a nice proposition. Glad I don't have to forecast the market there.
True... didn't even get full MLE money...

Obviously the situations are different... I still think the floor for a Hood deal is 4/50 unless he has a lot of injuries. The ceiling might be 4/80... teams get stupid.

I want to give Stanley Johnson a shot at a rebirth. He could be good at the 4 in a small ball lineup. Especially against smaller teams (Rockets, Warriors).

The most recent reports out of Detroit are that SVG likes the roster now. We will see if its true.

I think having a small-ball four who's really a wing playing is already a stretch (no pun intended) if they can shoot, but playing a small-ball four who can't shoot seems really backwards.

The Lou Williams contract, and all the reporters thinking that this summer is a market correction for free agent deals, is making me think about just keeping Hood. Is he allowed to sign an extension now, or does he have to wait?

I don't mind moving him, but I do want the price to be right.

If Quin can teach Rubio then he can teach anyone.

We better do something. We have to do something.

Joe wants out
Favors probably leaves for nothing this summer
Hood has been shopped and needs a new deal this summer
Burks is worthless due to O'Neale
Thabo, although we love him, is injured for the rest of the year

So we have $28 million in tradeable expirings, a young asset who probably told the FO he wants to be the starter, and a guy in Burks who has been the subject of interest (according to reports).
