Utah vs. Boise in Las Vegas Bowl

Boise rolls in this one by 20+. I never, ever doubt Boise in any game anymore, except when they play Nevada (who's always given Boise a hard time). They're too well coached to have a slip-up.

Not Vegas Bowl related, but I didn't want to make a new thread.

Was just looking at some video of an OLB recruit from Baltimore that Utah just got a verbal from. His name is Tre James and according to Rivals, he's a 3 star recruit. He was also considering places like Maryland, Rutgers and South Carolina so it's nice to see Utah beat out schools from the ACC, Big East, and SEC.

According to a Rutgers recruiting site, James said that playing PAC12 football is what ultimately led him to choose Utah. Hopefully we see a lot more of that come signing day.

Utah football: Utes respect Boise State’s defense

The Utah Utes know all about Boise State’s prolific quarterback, Kellen Moore, and the deep lineup of skill players he uses.

But what concerns Utah coach Kyle Whittingham as much as Boise State’s offense, if not more, is the way the Broncos’ defense plays.

“That is the most overlooked phase of their game,” he said. “Their defense is outstanding. They’ve got 45 sacks and are giving up 13 points a game. It’s probably the phase of the game that is the primary reason for their success.”

Whittingham’s concern over the Broncos’ defense is heightened for a couple of reasons.

The No. 20 Utes (10-2) will go into the Dec. 22 Las Vegas Bowl against the No. 10 Broncos (11-1) not only without starting quarterback Jordan Wynn, but with a run game that is struggling.

The Utes rank fourth in the Mountain West, averaging 156.8 rushing yards a game, but rushed for more than 100 yards only once in the last four games, doing so at San Diego State (138).

Getting back up to its average is critical if Utah is going to beat Boise State, Whittingham said.

“We had some issues in the first half of the last ballgame and the run game was nonexistent,” he said of the 11 first-half rushing yards the Utes had against BYU. “In the second half we were able to get that to improve and ended up with 90 yards or so, but that is going to be a factor. It’s a big challenge for our run offense.”

Nevada in the 2nd half got a couple big plays that chewed up a lot of yardage. It'll be tough for the utes to do that against this defense. We haven't been getting big runs in the running game. I don't know how effective Cain can be on the long ball he's more of a short yardage passer. That's why I think we have to pull out the bag of tricks against this defense. We should have a couple other players attempting passes besides Cain.

Boise's best unit is their defense in my mind, especially at home. They held Fresno and Hawaii, two pretty good offenses, to a combined 7 points. They can make a very good offense look completely inept.

Anyone watch the bowl special tonight? I was happy to see them showing Utah sugar bowl highlights when they did the Alabama bowl game. But they spent almost the entire time talking about Boise when the vegas bowl discussion came up, I think all they mentioned about utah was that Wynn was out and some guy named Cain was going to start. They had Boise as their 2nd highest confidence pick. America's vote was like 89% in favor of Boise. I can't say i'm surprised though. I was surprised they had BYU has a high confident pick, I know they are facing UTEP, but still, that's a lot of confidence in a 6-6 team.

I was a little surprised America's vote was 89% to 11%. I mean we're talking about two top 20 teams here. I expected Boise State to be favored by America but that wide of a spread really shocked me. Not surprised though with the talking heads not mentioning anything Utah related (minus the Wynn/Cain talk). Hell, on the last BCS selection show one of them said Boise could beat Utah 100-0.

I wasn't surprised. All most people outside of Utah saw was were their two worst performances of the season, looking at other message boards there seems to be a lot of doubt in this Utah football team. I've seen some pretty lopsided score predictions. We might as well be 6-6 to these people. I hope we can prove them wrong.

Official word has been hindered by MAACO Bowl Las Vegas preparations. However, highly touted junior college running back John White did, indeed, sign a letter of intent with the Utes. The Harbor College (Calif.) star rushed for 1,491 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2010 and netted 1,036 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2009. White plans to enroll at Utah in January and is likely the heir apparent to replace Matt Asiata and Eddie Wide as Utah's primary back next season.

Looks like he got offers from a couple SEC schools among others, so not a bad signing to try and fill the RB void next season

Probably because the only game America watched this year on the Utes was the Notre Dame game. It was the only one that I can think of that was nationally televised.

I think a lot of people still feel that Boise is a top college team that just had a hiccup against Nevada. It's too bad they aren't offered the same big conference standards. If there were a playoff system installed, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see Boise coming out on top. If the BCS system were installed in the NBA, Kobe would have at least double the rings, Dallas would have been a dynasty, and T-mac might have actually won something.

That's an excellent point. If I were in that situation, I would probably view it the same way.

I find it kind of funny how much Utah is running their mouths before this game. Perhaps they're doing it to relieve some of the fear of being blown out?

Boise St. has been one of the most dominant forces in Div I Football for a long time. Their program is what BYU and Utah should aspire to have. IMO, if Utah wins this it will be BY FAR the biggest upset in Coach Whit's career. At least Utah against Alabama was at worst, a fringe BCS buster. Some critics could have said that they barely got by Oregon St and should have lost to TCU. I understand that argument.

However, this Boise St. team is fantastic while this Utah team isn't very good at all. The gap between the two teams is much greater than Utah vs Pitt, Utah vs Bama, and Utah vs nearly any team they've seen in a long time. If Utah has any shot, they'll need several once in a lifetime performances. While also needing Boise to either play uninspired or have a half of falling asleep (like they did against Nevada).

I predict a ticked off Boise to pick Cain off several times and to be up by at least 3 touchdowns by halftime. This one is going to get ugly ala TCU (Biggest game ever in the state of Utah)......

Lets see how good this Girlsie St. team really is... But that's ok, Utah is going to the PAC-10 and doesn't care about this game, right Salty?
