Utah vs. Boise in Las Vegas Bowl

FYI
Here's a portion of an Sltrib article with a recruiting update:

The Utah Utes might have found their replacement for senior Shaky Smithson, a player who earned a reputation as being one of the most dangerous kick returners in the country in 2010.

The Utes picked up a commitment from Philander Moore, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound receiver at Blinn Community College in Brenham, Texas.

Moore was named a first-team junior college All-American after finishing the season with 811 total yards on kick and punt returns with six touchdowns. He had 182 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Moore, who has three years to play three, said he picked Utah over Ole Miss, Texas Tech and Boise State after a visit in which he enjoyed meeting his future teammates.

“The coaches there and the team there are really bonded together,” he said. “It’s a great place to be.”

Don't know what the kid's ranking is but it is nice to see Utah beat out an SEC school, a Big12 school, and the school that just took them behind the woodshed.

Seriously, his name is Philander?

My great-great-grandfather was named Philander. I was very happy my dad didn't name me after him. :)

I don't know if anyone is familiar with the musical, Polly, written by Steven Kapp Perry, but it's about that Philander and his wife, Polly. Obviously, from the title, it's mainly about Polly. In the musical, Polly has a line (when they are dating), which goes, "Philander, I ask in all candor, should a girl take a chance on a man named Philander?"

Didn't want to start a new thread so it looks like that Moore kid keeps flip flopping between U and Ol Miss currently looks like Ol Miss. But guess on the local kids Harvey Langi committed to the U.

Whitt pulled Philander's offer. He didn't flip flop. He was set on coming to the U, but Whitt pulled his offer when he visited Ole Miss.

Do you not see the contradiction there?
Not at all. Care to point it out?

Some kid accepts a free vacation and it means there is a contradiction?

Read his twitter. He was already committed to the U. Ole Miss brought him out there, and he told them the whole time he was going to the U either way. He only agreed to go to Ole Miss because it was a free trip, and Ole Miss understood that. He had been tweeting about it before, during, and after the trip.

Whitt made an example out of him. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well, I haven't followed the situation enough to be very knowledgeable, but somehow I doubt Ole Miss foots the bill for free trips for kids that they feel have absolutely no chance of coming.

Well that is what happened. He had been tweeting that he was committed to Utah for several days before the Ole Miss trip.
Maybe Ole Miss was adamant about bringing him out anyway because they knew Whitt would pull his offer if he went.
Either way, he thought he was going to be a Ute before, during, and after his Ole Miss trip. And his tweets while it was happening confirm it.

They knew Whitt would pull his offer if he went to another school? Man, you truly are retarded. Thousands of kids every year have scholarship offers from schools while they visit other schools. I guarantee you that kids Whitt has offered still visit other schools every year. A kid doesn't visit a school if they don't have an offer.

You say I'm retarded and then post this nonsense?

Look, moron, if you're going to call someone retarded at least know what the heck you're talking about.

It wasn't a case of someone having an offer and still visiting another school. It was a case of someone being committed and still visiting another school. And I would think BYU fans would know the difference, since BYU went through this exact same thing last season.

If you recall, BYU had a commit named Kona Schwenke, who then went on a trip to Notre Dame. Bronco pulled his offer. During a radio interview, Whitt was asked if he would do the same, and he answered, "Absolutely." This was all just last January so Whitt pretty much had to back up what he said.

As for Philander, here are some of his tweets:

I understand y'all are upset and feel lied too but as you know I was committed to Utah and I was very strong on it . Coach Nutt asked me to visit his school and in my best interest to visit , since Utah was the only school I've been to. Now me doing this Utah took my scholarship so it wasn't me that did it. It was y'all , but I'll still cheer for y'all good luck Utes !!"

I really like Langi's highlight tape. I guess he is pretty much the default starter from day 1 there too. Should be pretty interesting to watch his development.

No one is committed until they sign. It's that simple. IMO, if you're "committed", you don't go visit other schools. I'm committed to my wife, so I don't go out with other women. I'm committed to my job, so I don't go out looking for a new one.

Wouldn't it be more like a non-marital relationship? You're technically in a relationship but always keeping your options open because you haven't pulled the trigger(signed) yet? Because if you meet another person that is better than the current person you're with, you should be free to ditch them.

Although, of course, I understand why schools do it. You can't be locked into a situation where scholarships are left unused. The game is simply to get as much of the best talent you can and hope some of that talent develops.
