They were in a position to GET INTO overtime, as you say. Therefore, they had not yet lost the game, as I say.They were in a position to GET INTO overtime, not already heading there before the last play. That's a big difference. In my mind, if they had been tied or ahead on that last play and USC had scored, they lost on the last play. Not when they were already losing.
And technically, they were not only in a position to get into overtime, they still had time for a shot or 2 at the end zone. It was first down from the 24 yard line with the clock stopped and around 11 seconds left.
