Disclaimer: I would prefer that everyone did not smoke or vape. I have lung disease even though I have never smoked, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. But my opinion on the U.S. hysteria over the current rash of vaping illnesses and deaths is that it is unfounded and misguided.

When vaping first came on the scene, I saw several instances of coworkers and neighbors who were able to quit smoking using vaping products and then tapering off. It seemed like an effective way to quit, and a much safer option than smoking. And I much preferred walking through vapor instead of smoke outside my office building.

It is alarming how many minors are now vaping, however. It should have been much better controlled and obviously marketed differently. However, the majority of smokers begin in their teenage years, so the market has historically done a poor job of keeping these products out of the hands of children.

And now there are a rash of illnesses and deaths from the use of illegal THC vaping products. So what is the reaction? Let's make all vaping illegal. Seriously? Let's compare the number of smoking deaths to vaping deaths. Shouldn't the outcry be for the ban on cigarettes? Oh yeah, the tobacco industry contributes much more politically than the vaping industry.

So what would be the result of making vaping illegal? Smoking rates would increase. Great, that's just what we want. Those who use illegal products will keep on using illegal products, and those who use legal products might start down the illegal path.

There is no upside to this lunacy, other than non-vapers feeling superior.

From what I understand the ban is not vaping per se but rather all the flavored products that appeal to younger users.

The one aspect that I find interesting is how rapidly some of these people become ill after they start vaping. Typically cigarettes take years to adversely affect the user in a major way. Vaping, in certain cases negatively affects users in a relatively short amount of time.

I’m shocked utterly shocked that tobacco companies would market a product to kids that would do them harm. I mean, just consider their record! Who would’ve guessed that breathing in a bunch of chemicals from things that look like flash drives would be detrimental to your health.

The original call has been to ban all vaping products. Some states have started with the flavored products. Since it is the illegal street stuff that is causing the problem, this won't affect the illness and death rates. But it will cause smoking tobacco rates to rise.

Vaping THC laced illegal products are what are negatively affecting users in a relatively short amount of time. Not the legal stuff.

The vaping lung disease is terrible. It's more or less popcorn lung, worse than emphysema. It's still marginally better than smoking, but we don't really know the rates of illness but the rates are increasing. It's truly frightening.

I think it has something to do with vapor beginning as a liquid. Once it hits your lungs it will cool and some of it will condensate back into liquid and stay in your lungs.

Cigarettes aren't able to do that so it's a longer slower killer.

    I have no clue though.

What I've heard is that ALL of these very recent incidents are linked to illegal THC vape cartridges.

One year ago this wasn't a thing, even though people have been vaping tobacco and THC for several years now. In a very short span of time there have been numerous instances that have all been linked to illegal THC vaping cartridges.

This isn't a issue with vaping, this is an issue with a "bad batch" of black market products.

On the news last night, someone said it is suspected that those manufacturing the THC cartridges are cutting in other ingredients to make it go further. Guess they've used the wrong something.

I can't believe how quickly some states are mobilizing on this. If only they could work this fast on issues that affect greater numbers of people...

Can the chemicals in the vape be any worse than the stuff in cigarettes? Having recently quit smoking (6 or 7 weeks ago, cold turkey like a boss) I found that a few days later I started to get small mouth ulcers, (My Oral hygiene ain't terrible i brush twice a day.) mate of mine suggested that was a deliberate and designed side effect of quitting. I reckon he had a point.

Here's the thing: I'm not young by any means, and the flavors are part of what attracted me.

You don't say Methuselah? One of the blokes I used to work with used to love his vape, think he was on 16mg? Or was it 30mg? He used to sport some interesting flavours. I tried it and didn't like it, figured I was better off just giving up (Like I did with life...) and with a pack of Stuyvesant's costing 40 bucks (Price went up on the 1st of Sep, think 45 bucks might be the current price) a pack I'm saving between 400 and 500 dollars a fortnight.

You just threw fortnight in there to mess with us, didn't you? I mean, you don't actually call it that in real life, do you?

Also... $40/pack!!?!?!?!!?! Even with the exchange rate, that's still $10 USD. (I kid, in some areas, they actually ARE $10/pack or more, with taxes.)

I'm doing 3 or 6 mg, I go back on forth, but it matters how it's done and how it's measured, it's not always comparable.

And the price has gone up since!

    Yes fortnight is common parlance.

Since I've quit smoking and greatly reduced my drinking I'm about 2500 bucks a month better off.

Yeah, my wife also loves the flavors.

I told her at the worst this would just mean she got flavorless juice and would have to add flavor to it.
