It often seems that the smokers around here are those with the lesser paying jobs, and I've never understood how they can afford it. I'm grateful I never picked up the habit and instead get to waste my money on chocolate.

I know a lot of blue collar folks that smoke that make a pretty good living. Some make $20+/hr. I also know a number of people on the other end of the spectrum...

I feel like 20+ per hour is still a lesser paying job.

I don’t think I’d say $20/hr is lesser paying, but I wouldn’t call it a high paying job either.

I would still call it being poor.
20 bucks per hour equals about 2400 dollars per month (40 hour weeks) after taxes and insurance.

I don't know the average rent/mortgage but let's say 1300. Then 200 dollar car payment. 100 for electric bill. 100 for gas. 50 bucks auto insurance. 100 cell phone. 50 dollars internet/cable. Water/waste removal another 50 bucks. So now we are at 1950 dollars. Food at 300. Gas for car 50.
Now you have 100 dollars left for any kind of fun or entertainment. And if you also have a family to take care of then you are ****ed. God forbid your furnace goes out or basement floods or anything health issues arise
Now these are obviously ballpark numbers and some are high and some are low but you get the point which is that 20 per hour ain't **** these days.

20 an hour is about 40k a year. That’s not poor.

You’re assuming only one person works in the relationship.

I feel like there is more to being poor than income.
    Like cost of living.

No. I never assumed a relationship at all.
Some people are single. Single without kids and single with kids. They can be poor or rich or whatever too

I just do the tenth of a second math and double the number.

Um. That was tenth of a second. You're an English teacher right?

Seriously though a lot of people don't know that you generally use 2080 as the regular full time hours in a year to convert an hourly rate to an annual one.

What I’m saying is that if one gets paid 30 an hour their ballpark salary is 60 as in 60K. Super quick and easy. Not that it figures in OT but you get the point.

    That would be $62,400 annually. 30/hr x 2080 is $62.4K, didn't you just read Loggrad's posts?

Most english teachers don't know about the 2080 rule. No biggie.
