What's new

Video Game Thread

Have you played the first two Knights Of The Old Republic, or Half Life? Also good story lines. I played through the first Mass Effect, I have the second but haven't yet played it.

I used to play a LOT of HL2DM, and I still play some TF2. I want to get back into it some. Could use a newish card though since my 4850 is showing it's age some.

Yeah, I agree, maybe "easily the best" was a bit of hyperbole since those you mentioned are also excellent, though KOTOR2 really needed to be worked on for another year.

Though I will say the story and the world that Mass Effect has created I think I would rank the best I've seen. I wish the guys who made Fable had a bit more of that team's brilliance.

The first Fable has to be the most disappointing game I have ever played relative to the pre-release hype it received. **** Fable and **** that guy who made it.

Srsly thinking about buying ME3. I still have ME1 that I borrowed from a friend. Still haven't beaten it, half way through and got sidetracked and never returned to it. Maybe I will start again.

I read the other day that Rockstar recently hired for a new open world game and many are assuming it's for Red Dead Redemption 2. I'm also really looking forward to Borderlands 2.

SSX is coming out for 360 and PS3. I am so excite.
I did buy SSX, since I was a big fan of SSX3 on the PS2 (me an everyone else who played it).

They did good. Damn fine reboot. I'm not crazy about the amount of bottomless pits, and I miss the long 25-minute run you could do all the way down the three linked peaks like you could do in SSX3... but it controls well, and riding down the slopes is as exhilarating as ever.

EDIT: Hey, while I'm at it, it occurs to me that I've actually bought several other games recently, and pre-ordered a couple more. May as well mention those games, too.

First, I finally broke down and bought Twisted Metal, the reboot of the series that started with the PS1 launch game of same name.

I was initially turned off by the fact that 1) a lot of reviewers said the single-player campaign sucked, and 2) watching the videos, there seemed to be a distinct lack of real physics, as ever.

After playing for a while, neither of these aspects is actually that bad. Some of the story modes can be a bit gimmicky, like the races, but I think it actually does add a bit of interest. I was also a bit annoyed that Warthog could only be unlocked by getting all gold medals on all story missions on highest difficulty. But I actually just managed to do this tonight... not so bad when you use the Juggernaut vehicle and apply yourself a bit.

As for the physics... yeah, they're kinda wacky, and most of the vehicles handle like bathtubs, making using the "tight turn" a necessity. But you get used to it after a few hours of play.

Only other disappointing thing is that there aren't the plethora of characters anymore. There are just as many vehicles, but now any driver can get in any vehicle. What this means is that there are only three characters with endings where Calypso grants their wish. The F'd up character endings were a great part of the first game, so it's too bad there are only three of them. At least they were all good ones.

But as for the gameplay overall, it's exactly what you'd expect of a Twisted Metal game. You drive around picking up weapons and charging your special attacks, and then unload on some hapless enemy, pausing only to get health pick-ups when you're near death.

There have been a number of interface improvements. The mini-map is much improved over previous games, and the weapons display at the bottom of the screen very clearly shows all of the weapons you have on you. The special commands, like shield, freeze missile, and mine, no longer require arcane button combinations, but are instead mapped to single presses of the digital pad, and clearly labeled.

There are also some interesting new gameplay additions: killing an opponent will see its drivers leap out of the car in flames, and running the drivers over will count as a "mercy kill," granting either a bit of health or a random weapon... just a little extra incentive to finish people off. Also, for most matches in the story mode, you can pick three different vehicles per match (or three copies of the same vehicle, if you prefer), and then drive into the level's garage mid-match to switch, either because your health is low or because you just want to try a new approach. Also, almost all vehicles have two special attacks rather the one, giving them a bit more flexibility.

Overall, I'd say this is a worthy successor to the original games. I haven't been disappointed.

I also bought the new UFC game, UFC Undisputed 3. It's an improvement over the last game in every way. Three improvements especially stick out:

1) Submissions aren't broken anymore. In the previous game submissions were just plain old annoying, since at higher levels the computer's submissions were basically impossible to escape, and always worked. Even when player friends, whether they worked or not seemed kinda random, and the only thing you do to stop them was rotate the right stick really fast. But in this game, submissions are decided via a minigame that has the submitting player trying to overlap his opponent's color with his own. It works really really well, so now submissions are actually fun both to attack with and defend against.

2) They've added a Pride ring, Pride rules, and a number of Pride fighters. In fact, the roster is larger than ever, and includes a number of great old-school fighters like Royce Gracie, Dan Severn, Mark Coleman, Don Frye, and Gary Goodridge, just to name a few.

3) Career mode is much more streamlined and functional than in the previous iteration.

Other than that, it's the same great game as before. Any UFC fan will love it.

I've also preordered Tales of Graces f (March 13) and Armored Core 5 (March 20). The former is a JRPG in the Tales series of game, which I'm a big fan of, and the latter is the latest mech combat game from developer From Software, who were most recently responsible for Dark Souls. I've been an Armored Core fan since the first game came out for the PS1 back in 1997, and I'm hopeful that this will be another great entry in a series that's more than 15 games long now.

Nice review. I too gave in and purchased Twisted Metal. That's a pretty big deal for me. I used to be a pretty hardcore gamer, but have fallen off the past few years. Twisted Metal was always one of my favorite franchises. I'm pretty happy with it so far. Haven't tried the online multiplayer yet.

Ok, so here a little while ago we picked up an XBOX 360 with the Kinnect. The Kinnect is great for having friends over, but I'm a relatively new gamer. The series I have spent the last few months becoming acquainted with are Assasins Creed, Gears of War, Call of Juarez, and of course the various Madden's and NBA2K's.

But here's where I need a little advice. I'm looking to pick up some games and wondering what everyone on here recommends. I saw Nate talking about Mass Effect, what's the story on that? I don't have a ton of time to spend playing games like Skyrim, just looking for something like Assassins Creed that I can sit down and play for a few hours at a time on my days off. Any recommendations?

Well, I'm a big gamer, although I rarely play my 360 anymore... almost all PS3 nowadays. But most games are on both systems now, anyway.

Let's see... so many things I could recommend...

If you like racing, there's Burnout Paradise. It's an old game, so it will be cheap to buy.

If you like fighting games, I think there still hasn't been a better one than Dead or Alive 4 on the 360. Also an oldie, so again it won't bankrupt you.

Borderlands is fun as hell. Combines shooting with a really rewarding loot system that has you always looking for the next great gun. I've played it all the way through more than five times now, and it's probably one of my favorite games ever. There's a "game of the year" edition now which includes all the DLC on the disc.

As others have said, Mass Effect is really, really good. One of my favorite games ever. However, it is kind of a story-driven game that might not feel as satisfying if your schedule means you'll be playing it piecemeal. But it certainly can be done. More in the open-world mold like the aforementioned Skyrim are Red Dead Redemption, Batman: Arkham City and Dark Souls (this last if you like a challenge). Again, you can play all of these in stints, but if you want something "not like Skyrim," you might want to avoid these.

I can make any number of other recommendations if you have a specific genre in mind.

Me Personally I thought Mass Effect 1 and 2 were kinda boring lol. After playing Knights of the Old replublic and even Jade Empire to an extent I expected Mass Effects story to be better. There are some "I can't believe this just happened" moments in those previous two games made by the same company and the story of the first two mass effects were eh.

Red Dead Redemption is the best game made since Legend Of Zelda OoT imo .

The best Kinect Games by far are the Dancing Games. Dance Central 2. It is the funnest, provides decent workout, and good for friends. Also, I hate those workout games. The purpose is I do not want to feel like I am having a workout!

Dude if you never have played 360 I would at first only get games that are old. Thats what I did when I first bought mine. Two games I remember getting are Chronicles of Riddck: Dark Athena and also Brutal Legend. Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Athena came with its prequel, I bought it for 11 bucks. Brutal Legend I got for 4 bucks but I got it on black friday.

I would go to store and look at all the cheap games and have a cell phone to check online what it's rating are. There is no need to buy any new games imo.

Actually, the growing trend is being FORCED to buy games new because companies are adding required fees for online passes and whatnot to eliminate companies like Gamestop. Plus, you can't beat the smell of a new game or unboxing your new Collectors Edition!

this is impressive...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM2Rkqvd5uY

After Heavy Rain, we wanted to push the envelope in terms of quality, starting with the visuals. We wanted to improve many things — things that were not possible with the Heavy Rain engine. So we had to develop a new engine from scratch.

We also wanted to improve the quality of the acting. With Heavy Rain, we did what many games do — split performances, recording a voice on one side and a body animation on the other, putting everything together and crossing your fingers that you get a consistent performance. It worked okay for Heavy Rain, but you lose a lot of a performance by splitting into two and rebuilding it artificially.

We wanted to do what Avatar did by having one full performance where we capture everything at the same time. And we wanted to demonstrate these new performance capture techniques and the new engine before going into production, so we developed a short showcase that would allow us to test these ideas and technologies. This is how “Kara” was created.

“Kara” is not our next game. It’s not the character, it’s not the world, it’s not the story. …We do things in a very strange way here, things that have nothing to do with the games we make. But I think that’s a part of the DNA of the studio, and hopefully something that people like about us – they never know what they’re going to get!

Games nowadays do that, not older games :)
