Washington at Jazz Thread: Who gives a ****?

a midwife who had never heard of parents' desire to do something with the placenta besides toss it in the trash? Was this the midwife's first birth? 'Alternative' uses/designs for the placenta are exceedingly normal.

I agree with you.
Lots of weirdos out there

Oh my god. Weirdos
Lol. I forgot to mention that they were both vegans, and that they attempted to eat the placenta uncooked. I think for strict vegans that eating placentas in any form would be frowned upon, but I'm not sure.

Edit: It's possible that I misunderstood or mis-remembered the details of their conversation with the midwife. After all, this story is 19 years old and I couldn't believe what I was hearing at the time (nor could any of the other expectant mothers and fathers in the room). As far as I'm concerned, toss that thing in the medical waste bin.

I'm still riding high on this game. It's funny that Neto only had two assists but they were memorable. 5 turnovers though. I want to see the Jazz decimate the Kings Sunday. I want Gobert to get angry and pull down 20 boards.

I enjoyed the game, but I can understand why people are reacting the way they are. The Jazz have lost so many leads recently that instead of getting excited when they are playing well you start to dread what's to come. Those collapses are so miserable to experience that nobody wants to get overly excited anymore.

And since the real purpose of this thread is to share birthing class experiences, when my ex and I were going through our class the instructor had this favorite pet couple who had gone through a previous class and would visit each time to tell us about the progress of their pregnancy. They were a few months ahead of everyone in the class so I guess some of the people found it fascinating to see the changes in the woman's belly or something. This man and woman were serious tree huggers, and they ad decided that they were going to have their baby as naturally as possible. The idea of no anesthetic, and all of the other wholistic stuff just thrilled the instructor (though it didn't do anything for most of the women in the class who wanted lots of medication). Then one day they showed up and told us their baby had come. They shared the wonderful connecting experience of going through labor with no painkillers, and they told us how it had strengthened their marriage. They told us every detail of the experience including the following gem that I will never forget.

After the birth they looked at the placenta, sitting in a bowl looking very sad. They asked the midwife what would become of it. She told them it would go into the trash. They were shocked and upset. This wonderful organ had played a central role in the creation of their child. It was the very essence of the transfer of life. How could they let it rot in a trash can? "Can we have it?" The midwife had never been asked such a thing, but finally she decided that would be okay. They took it home and put it in the fridge for a few days, but eventually realized that they did not want it there long term... so they decided to eat it. It was horrible. After one bite each they realized there was no way they could follow through on their pledge, so they gave it a funeral and buried it in their back yard.

I really despise couples who harp on about having had a "natural, drug free" birth blah blah ..... Natural drug free intervention free births include a significant risk of maternal death not to mention a decent rate of some horrendous experiences. Those tree hugging hippies who happen to be luck enough to have a straightforward birth and then crap on about it and rub others noses in it are some of the most obnoxious ignorant idiots around. The do other women such a disservice by placing by and large unrealistic pressure and expectations on them.

Mum healthy and baby delivered healthy .. win win. That is all that matters.

oh .. and big boobs .. another win !

Guess my wife and I were old school. We didn't go to any classes. We also had a Jerry Sloan- like doctor. Guy swore like a drunken sailor. But we didn't jackpot around. When he said push, my wife pushed. Why do people go to these birthing classes?

To learn how to birth?

To learn how to birth?

its pitch and catch: the wife pushes and the doctor catches. The partner supports however he/she can (I'm being politically correct here). Billions of people have been born without parents having to take classes. Really, it's not rocket science.

Yeah, people have learned how to do a lot of things without classes, that doesn't mean taking classes to learn something or prepare yourself is a useless thing.

Why am I not allowed to like this post multiple times? The couple I was talking about were the epitome of what you just described. The thought of them choking on their placenta was a beautiful thing. We remained close friends with three couples we met in that class and we laughed about that often.

My ex would not blow her nose without going to a class about it. Good riddance.

For the humor! Farts? Boob jokes? Relaxin on pillows? What's not to like.

Really though, it was a fun class and I learned allot and my wife and I bonded.

They also teach you about what diet and exercises you could be doing to help mommy and baby, they teach you warning signs to watch out for in case of complications. I actually learned allot in just the first class.

It isn't just about the act of being in labor

Lots of classes are unnecessary but can still help.

I drove a car before ever taking a class.
Drivers ed was still a good idea.

People gave birth without dr's, hospitals, epidurals, sanitary equipment, etc etc for thousands of years. Everyone should just give birth in the dirt in the back yard with booze to help with the pain tbh

makes you wonder how human births were even possible............ for hundreds of thousands of years.

Hospital births are basically brand new in human history. Before that, we were obviously a species in peril.

as per usual you've completely missed the point. Different beliefs is absolutely fine, it's those who then very clearly imply that their way is somehow a superior experience and are insufferably smug about it that were being referred to.

the irony being that you're sounding equally smug.

"per usual"... lol. Gooood one.
