Westbrook to Utah in Dunn sign and trade

Consider this....The Hornets got DEN's 25, 29, and 30 second round picks for taking on Reggie Jackson's $5.25M contract. The Jazz got a single second round swap and cash to take on WB's $4M deal.

The Hornets sold their cap space for future picks. The Jazz sold their cap space for extra cash.
They did abnormally well though. I think the Pistons only got 2 and gave up Grimes for more dead money. Yeah this is partly more evidence Danny doesn't care about 2nds. I wouldn't even be surprised if the money is bigger and the pick is like top 55 protected swap.

As long as they don’t aggregate his salary with another player, the Jazz could also flip him to the 3rd team for a minimal asset as well. Wouldn’t surprise me if DA tries that before just going the buyout route.

Also evidence the main goal was to treat Dunn well.

I didnt know if you ask for something it happens...

I'm sure the Jazz asked, but are they going to go hard when the ultimate goal is to get Dunn paid?

Do we even know how much $$$ was traded? That would be kind of key if you want to claim "factual"

Yes, it could be the case that they were asking for picks. The fact of the matter is that the Jazz sold their cap space for cash money. It is what was settled on.

The reason I'm bringing this up isn't even to say this is bad or that we're in a worse position. It's just to state that one of two things must be true: 1)The Jazz chose money over picks or 2) DA doesn't actually get everything he wants just because he asks for it. You can believe whichever version of this you want, one of these things must be true.

In some ways you can argue a 2nd round swap is more valuable than a first round swap if the team that is getting swapped on still owns it first. That team could be in position to tank and wouldnt change it's decision to tank based on a 2nd round swap.

They've been trying to find a 3rd team for Russ for the last two weeks. It's not happening. They will waive him.

I'm fine with that... the money and Dunn are the motivations here. I have no complaints. If we want to complain the complaint should be that we could have moved him at the deadline for a couple seconds I'm sure.

Just saying no one is changing their plans based on a 2nd round swap. Obviously you'd rather have a first for the random factor, but if the Clippers dont trade their 29/30/31 first rounders they could tank in those years and you get a nice 2nd rounder.

I think CHO did great, there's a big between the pick compensation they got and what we got. That difference is cash. One of two things must be true. 1) We wanted the cash more or 2) DA wanted the picks but couldn't get them.

Also, I don't think DET considers THJ dead money. He may have been benched for the playoffs, but he's only a one year deal and played >2000 minutes two seasons in a row. He's going to help them with their goals, or at least they think he will.

Wait until the full details come out. I really think it could be top 55 protected swap and they did it this way so the Clips can trade it again. Its kind of weird to just not get it outright.

That would make sense. Overall I think it's just Utah trying to be the "come to Utah we will increase your value" organization more than anything else.

I also think timing of the execution of the deal helped Denver. CHO did exceptional with that small deal... was just mentioning it was a slight outlier. I would have expected 1-2nd but you are right... the cash was the real prize. Helping Kris out is noble. The swap... thanks?

This and the money. I'm not even bagging on them... its a business. Just can't discount the fact they probably did pretty well financially here.

Gotta hit the floor anyway so whatevs.

Honestly what the hell was Denver thinking with that Jackson trade? It's so weird looking back at it. Why were they in such a hurry to get off 5 million? That has to be an owner being super weird and pushy, right?

He would’ve raised the floor a perilous amount. By the way, that’s how you know the motivations of the FO: Westbrook with Lauri and decent spacing (at least in ‘23) with a defensive floor like Kessler would’ve won too many (pointless) games.

Yeah I'd also agree with you that there's a good chance it's a second round pick in name only. I'm sure we wanted to help Dunn out, but in the end....the real winner from the Jazz perspective is cash money in Ryan's pocket. I'm not mad about the trade, I'm just pointing out the obvious. If you're a CHO fan looking at this, you're even more ecstatic about the move they pulled off.
