What has Happened to Apollo Burger???

The Thriller

Well-Known Member
So I’ve always loved Astro/Apollo/Crown/Burger Supreme in Utah. Their pastrami burger is to die for. But over the past few years I’ve noticed Apollo expand and build locations throughout the wasatch front. Originally, I thought this was a great thing. But I’ve noticed that no matter which location I go to, the burgers have no seasoning and taste and the fries are meh.

Crown Burger remains the same delicious goodness. And recently I went to Burger supreme in Provo, it was delicious too. In fact, might’ve been better than crown honestly. I haven’t been to Astro in Draper for a while but I’ll assume they’re the same.

So what’s happened to Apollo? And is there any location that retains its tasty burgers? Did the new ownership just decide to cut costs by not seasoning their food anymore?

I think their expansion was probably preceded by them taking investors or selling out to an investment firm, then they rapidly expanded to get ahold on the market then looked for ways to reduce costs to increase profits.

I agree that they have gone way downhill. I either get the Gyro or Apollo Burger and my wife gets the jr. Apollo Burger. Used to be a very clear difference between the regular and the jr. burger, now I pretty much can't tell which is which.

I like Crown Burger still and Astro is okay, plus Olympus Burger is good.

Apollo has always been the low-quality Crown Burger knockoff. I won't go to any of the crown burner clones as long as crown Burger itself is available. Why waste the time, money, and calories on sub-par food?

There are no Crown Burger locations in the south-west quarter of the valley. That area is totally dominated by Apollo.

NVM I just looked and Apollo doesn't have any locations west of Redwood Rd.

You’re such a college educated west coast elitist who hates the working forgotten man. Many of us blue collar workers don’t live near Crown. I can’t just drive up from Lehi any time I get a craving for a pastrami burger. It’s like 45 mins away and that’s without the insane traffic that plagues I-15 from 3:30-7:00 every single day. That’s why I became really excited when not just one or two but three Apollos popped up. One next to the Costco in American fork, one near Thanksgiving Pt, and one near the Costco in Saratoga right off Redwood Rd. I’ve tried the American fork and Lehi locations and they’re all plagued with the same problem: their food doesn’t have any seasoning and taste.

I haven’t been to the Astro in Draper for a few years. But I will tell you that Burger Supreme in Provo off the Diagonal tasted just as good as Crown and that’s far more accessible than Crown. So instead of uppities like you rubbing our noses in it, maybe you should show more compassion for people like me. Or maybe Apollo should just get their **** together because I’d rather just eat a McDonald’s or In-n-out for far cheaper and arguably better food.

Is that on state st an like 80th something south. I've passed it a million times and never eaten there.
Yes that's correct.
My sister worked there like 30 years ago lol

This might also date me… but does anyone else remember Brand X in springville? That place was damn good. I think its owners died around 2007. If I had known I would’ve done something to get kicked off my mission/sent home early so I could have just one more cheeseburger and onion rings…

The Training Table teased that they were coming back but as far as I know they have not actually come back.
Agreed.
I love the club there and the fries. I was super excited for them to come back but..... Nothing

I loved going there, especially taking the kids. They liked ordering thru the phones, I loved the cheese fries and dipping sauce (but I would have them make it with sour cream instead of mayo, because mayo is disgusting) and several of their burgers.

Their website still says they're coming back and going to have food trucks and sell their sauces online, but it's said that for a few years now, I think...

If The Training Table showed up at the Utah State Fair or some other major event where most people get their food from food trucks there would be a line around the block immediately. I wasn't even that big a fan but I'd go for it.

Is B&D still around? Their burgers were great, but it was their shakes that kept me going back.

We used to go to the B&D by the U in the late 80's/early 90's when I was 18-22 years-old and lived on 1300E & South Temple. I also worked at Gepetto's for two years so that strip was my hood. Went to the same B&D with my daughter 1.5 years ago while she was a freshman living at the U, that was kind of trippy especially since I think the decor might be the exact same.

Was it still good food?

Anyone ever go to Burger Bar in Roy? We live close by but hardly go there any more. Great shakes and malts but pretty meh burgers iirc. They got a spot on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives years ago. Guy was underwhelmed, to say the least.

Maddox is a go-to for us being further in the north. Hell I vaguely remember when they had a drive-through in Riverdale. Also, I think they still have a small drive-through in Layton for chicken only or some such. We go there for turkey bugers and shrimp cocktail (not kidding, it's great). I was never that impressed with their sit-down fare, although it is my parent's hands-down favorite high-end restaurant, as high end as it may or may not actually be. It is expensive enough to qualify though.

Lastly, how about Nielsen's Custard, Bountiful and Layton? Good food in general but their custard is ice cream on another level. Pretty sure the secret ingredient is crack.

I went to Maddox a few years ago for my birthday. I was pretty underwhelmed with their steaks and even less impressed with their old folks home cafeteria grade sides. That and all their servers are high schoolers, so don't expect high end service. You do get to enjoy the early 70s decor though.
