What type of candidate can beat Trump?

NBC declared Trump the winner of last nights debate. They said that by largely ignoring him the candidates handed him victory.

So is it better to battle Trump or stick to the issues?

What kind of candidate would be most likely to take him down?

I think it will take a rich, powerful white man who is a successful business person and isn't afraid to call Trump a lying, treasonous, rapist to his face. I just don't see anyone from the D's who fits that bill.

What about someone like Mark Cuban?

I'm not sure a moderate can draw the votes. Whoever it is will need another email scare in late October to win.

tbh; I'm not sure I know what a moderate is anymore.

You don’t want to get into a pissing contest with him, that’s where he thrives. You want the opposite, someone intelligent, calm, collected and well-spoken.

Right, someone who can calmly and collectedly call him a lying, treasonous, rapist. I agree.

Liberal populist. I think a good analog is Jeremy Corbyn and how he fared in the general election against Theresa May in 2017.

My knee jerk reaction was a democrat version of Mitt Romney, which is kind of what you described.

I think in the general election it would be easy to elect a moderate who expresses pride in the past and optimism for the future while acting like an adult. Don't make statements that we or our families have failed in the past/are failing now, even if it is true many people will be put off by that (looking at you Warren). Make it a story of we were awesome, we are awesome, and we can be even more awesome!

As for insulting Trump, it would be silly to get in the mud with him. Everyone that tried was just not as good at it as he was and they ended up losing credibility. Think about it, if a child calls a teacher stupid would you be impressed if they called the child ugly? Trump has been a master of baiting people to focus on him at the expense of the issues. The media will fight the dirty fight for you (because they are biased), just rise above!

Why does it have to be a rich, powerful, white, man?

I don't get that at all. What counts as "power" in that statement? How rich do they have to be?
