What's new

What's The Last Movie You’ve Seen?

Saw the new pirates. Was probably 100x better than the last joke of one.

Did you need to see the previous one for this one to make sense? I haven't seen the previous one but I'm thinking about seeing this one.

I've been wondering the same thing.

So the new Pirates movie was way better than 3 or 4. It was on par with #1, which I felt was actually a really good movie. It was better than 2, but I liked 2 for the characters and the milieu. 3 just got stupid and overblown and 4 was a bad remake of 2 basically.

To answer the questions, unfortunately it is not a stand-alone movie. There are hints and outright plot points tied directly to all of the other movies. It felt like a wrap-up of the whole franchise really. There is an event at the end that kind of precludes any further "magical" adventures. However, the after credits scene hints at more to come that might be ok or might be really stupid.

I think they can really do good things within this franchise, and frankly it is the only thing I can watch Jonny Depp in anymore. He has become such a caricature of himself it is kind of pathetic, but he is in his element in the Pirates movies. And he does a decent job in this one.

Another decent twist in the Dead Men Tell No Tales was that they made a good guy into the villain, and my family and I are not sure how we feel about that. It made for all sorts of interesting conversation as we talked about the absolutes of good vs evil. More thought provoking than I think the movie-makers intended as they did not play up that aspect very much, but the undertones are there.

All in all I would give it a solid B or even B+. Fun movie, more depth both in character and story, than you might expect and a wholly satisfying ending. Will watch again.

No, you did NOT need to see pirates 4 at all to get the gist of the movie. JazzGal ONE LOVE

There ARE some returning characters from 1-3 though but really wouldn't mean too much if you haven't seen any.

If you see this movie, stay for the ENTIRE credits after. There IS an additional clip. It wouldn't mean anything to you at all though if you haven't seen 2 or 3 however.

You know what's funny is I thought the same exact thing and talked about it with my family.

I thought to myself, here we are enjoying these pirates who steal, murder, and are 'pretty loose' with woman. While the "bad guy" in this movie was all in all a good guy in reality. He and his crew fought to get rid of all the stealing, killing, and so forth and unfortunately was tricked by the younger Jack and cursed. I was kind of rooting for him tbh

I liked that twist. I thought it added depth to the movie, which was lacking in most of the other movies.

Adam Sandler's newest sucked. How do you screw up a movie that bad with a cast that includes every name drop possible? And then the 3rd act was actually pretty damn good.

I love this Netflix original model. It's bringing back to life some pretty dang good actors and actresses that otherwise don't have a stage for some reason.

Watching Nick Cave's One More Time with Feeling again, great film.

Just watched it.

It was OK, I mean it was never going to live up to #2 and #3 as those were built upon #1, etc. This was like a re-start of another trilogy and it felt like it needed a good 30-40 minutes to really kick into gear.

I'm gonna get straight to the point and say that Johny Depp didn't seem like his former 'Jack Sparrow' self in this one. He had always been over the top and played it like he was REALLY drunk on that rum. But not this one. This one he seemed a bit 'off' somehow. Maybe it was his dialogue? Maybe it was just him forgetting how he played the first 4 prior movies. I just can't put my finger on it.

One thing I really liked in this one was the ending. It literally nearly brought tears to my eyes. So touching to see who appeared right at the end there.
