What's new

What's your future Jazz rotation look like?

Let's see who's currently under contract

PG: Harris
SG: Hayward, Burks, Bell
SF: Miles
PF: Millsap, Favors, Evans
C: Jefferson, Kanter, Okur

Miles currently isn't officially under contract, but he's too cheap to cut. Jazz need backup PGs to fill out the roster. At least one, anyway.

PFs and SGs can fill the SF hole at Corbin's leisure.

Watson is the obvious choice to sign as backup PG. And I'm good with trying Burks as third string.

I still think they need to get one, either via FA or via trade. Of course I also think they should trade Miles. (Trade Miles for future draft pick, sign free agent SF. Sounds good.)

And isn't Bell unfortunately still under contract?

PG: Devin Harris, Earl Watson, Jacob Pullen/Ben Hansborough
SG: Gordon Hayward, Raja Bell, Alec Burks
SF: Paul Millsap, Kirilenko, C.J. Miles, Jeremy Evans, David Lighty
PF: Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter
C: Al Jefferson, Mehmet Okur

Wow. I don't see giving Burks the point except rarely. And I think we re-sign AK for little over the exception (but don't look at my mock draft for validation of my predictive skills).

Harris - 30, Watson 18, Price (or, in my dreams, Pullen) picking up some slack
Haywoody - 26, Bell (until traded) - 14, Burks - a few to start and more as he earns it
AK - 24, Miles - 20, Sap - in only small doses here
Big Al (don't dicker about positions except for the tip, our bigs pretty all play 2 positions) - 22, Sap - 22, Kanter - same as Burks
Favors - 22, Big Al - 8, Memo - 10, Kanter ditto

First off, I think we have to take into account next year's draft when considering our future rotation. We should have 2 lottery picks next year, Golden States (Top 7 Protected) and our own (because we aren't making the playoffs with this young roster). My thinking is that we will have 2 picks in the 8-14 range next year. If we can land either Austin Rivers or Marquis Teague I think we are set.

1- Future PG, Harris
2- Burks, Future Wing
3- Hayward, Sap (10 min max)
4- Favors, Sap
5- Big Al, Kanter

Eventually we will trade a big, either Al or Sap, for some additional PG or Wing help. Then I think we're pretty balanced and hopefully pushing for a playoff spot in 2012-2013.

I keep reading people mention using the mid-level exception. Everyone knows that the mid-level is 99.9% sure to be gone in the new CBA right?

Not necessarily. I believe the last proposal made by the owners included cap exceptions very similar to the current exceptions. The main difference from the current system is that the luxury tax level became a hard ceiling.

Harris (32)-Watson (16)- Price (0)
Hayward (33) - Burks (15)
CJ (33)- Millsap (15)
Millsap (15) - Favors (25) - Okur (8)
Jefferson (34) - Kanter (14)

The above doesn't factor in injuries, so per game averages will be higher. Initially I'd expect Kanter and Burks to get around 15 mins/per. I think CJ will be signed just to hold down the spot until a trade is made. Having his expiring and that of Okur's gives the Jazz some flexibility in terms of high/low salaries in a trade. Harris and Millsap are potential trading chips; Harris because of his age and playing style and Millsap because of the logjam at the 4/5 (if Kanter is the real deal).

Yes, I know everyone hates Price, but we need an emergency PG for one more year. When Harris misses 10 games - and he will - Price can at least fill in for 10 mins. behind Watson. No way do the Jazz insert Burks at 3rd-string PG right away. Too much to learn. He needs to concentrate on his natural position in Year 1.

Favors should be playing more than 25 minutes a game..
