One thing I'll say is, If it's a losing fight, it's possible that somebody like Pete or another candidate wouldn't want to spend his political capital just to lose. There needs to be a decent to good chance that they could pull it off. I think there is btw. Donald Trump is historically disliked and a terrible candidate. The Dems sure do love to lose though.
I was thinking about that too.
Maybe they want to save Pete for 2028 or something

I'm struggling to understand the reasoning behind the idea that replacing Biden with Kamala or Pete would lose because of racism, sexism or homophobia. This is a genuine question to anyone who has put this idea forward. What exactly is the demographic that's going to vote for Biden but in turn won't vote for Kamala or Pete because of racism, sexism or homophobia? The general premise is that the GOP is the bastion of homophobia, racism and sexism, and that a Trump ticket is a homing beacon for such. This premise requires that there's a sizable enough proportion of the population that's racist, sexist or homophobic enough to vote Biden but not Kamala or Pete, but then is not sexist, racist or homophobic enough to support Trump over Biden.

The mythical "swing" voters. Those who see enough of Trump's crap to not want to vote for him directly, but are not full-on progressive enough to embrace a woman or LGBTQ, or hell even a mormon candidate. I have several in my extended family who fit this bill. Discussions are usually along the lines that women are not prepared to be the president (usually meaning too emotional or not logical enough, or too soft, or too hysterical, or not strong enough to make the tough choices, whatever slur you want to think of fits here), and gay people don't represent the population (read: "gay people don't represent me" or simply "no way I am voting for a gay person"). Many of them in our family and acquaintance groups are mormon, so they have a strong patriarchal and anti-gay bent to begin with. Most also do not want a minority to be president again. Many voted for Trump the first time, so it isn't a huge stretch for them to vote Trump again. Or at least switch from a dem vote to an independent, which is as good as a vote for Trump at this point I believe those who follow this sort of thing tightly believe it is a fairly sizable chunk of the population, enough to likely swing a very close vote between Biden and Trump at this point, or at least enough to take votes away from Biden and to an independent to split the vote and let Trump win anyway. I think one nail in the coffin for Biden was the debate. Now Trump gets a sliver of that group in the sympathy vote from the assassination attempt. It's a complex landscape to be certain.

So those people with all those negative personal characteristics you described, they were going to vote for Biden, who is advocating all the same things they supposedly abhor?

Granted I haven’t seen much negativity about Pete in this thread, but I’ve seen plenty of (left-leaners) here that have detailed many varied reasons why they don’t like Kamala and think she’s a terrible candidate. From that angle it appears it’s appropriate to reject her as a candidate for reasons but if she’s rejected by the other side the implication is distilled to race and gender.

woah, this is no place for such sincere high level discussion mister

I struggle with the idea that someone is racist, sexist or homophobic enough to not vote for Pete or Kamala but they were otherwise going to vote for Biden. It requires a “nuanced racist” explanation.

It isn't black and white. It isn't "I love all gays" and "kill all gays". It is a spectrum for all of this. There are people who voted Trump then decided they didn't like how extreme he got. So they would prefer to vote against him. So a white male authority figure is easier for them to stomach than the other possible groups. Take that away and you have the risk of them voting independent or going back to Trump. It is nuanced and difficult to predict, but it is there. That is what most pundits believe as well. This group in the middle that don't necessarily trust an ethnic minority or female or alternative lifestyle candidate, but aren't necessarily frothing at the mouth about it. Those frothing at the mouth about it are already usually die-hard Trumpers to begin with.

Is the gop more racist, sexist, and homophobic? Sure. Does that mean that the Democrats are exempt from racism, sexism, and homophobia? Not even close.

Well that's weird.
Let's say I'm racist against poc. Biden isn't a POC so I can vote for him. Let's say I'm sexist against women. Biden isn't a woman so I can vote for him.
Let's say I'm homophobic. Biden isn't gay so I can vote for him.
Pretty easy to explain.
What dont you understand about that?

I think the Democratic party being afraid of their electorate not accepting a gay man as a candidate is a self-report of how far out-of-touch they are. And the only real problem with Kamala is her negative levels of charisma.
