What's new

Will DeMar DeRozan's contract this offseason set the floor for Hayward's deal?

It shouldn't. DeRozan is a 2 time all-star and has averaged 20+ 3 season in a row. But more importantly:

DeRozan is the best player on a 50+ win team.

Hayward is the best player on a 9th place team.

I think this is a fair statement. I remember when Derozan signed this contract everyone thought it was a bad deal. Turns out to be wrong...I think Hayward is an overall better player in terms of team ball, defense and passing. But Derozan is easily the better attacker/slasher.
Will be really interesting to see what kinda money he gets

DeRozan is the 2nd best player on a 50+ win team. Lowry is a clearly better player.

an understandable take, but in today's NBA 3pt shooting is the great equalizer - 263 3pt makes for Hayward in the past 2 seasons compared to DeRozan's 72 is kind of a big deal..

Before this turns into a DeRozan hatefest I'm gonna point out that Hayward's overall effectiveness is more matchup based than DeRozan (IMO)..

DeMar averages 15-21ppg vs every single team in the NBA over the course of his career..

Hayward has a list of teams he scores 12ppg against, and a few of them are in the West(Golden State and San Antonio...)

DeRozan would beat Hayward 1v1 IMO. If they played to 21, 10 times I'd think he'd win 7 of em. Hay's defense is much improved but DeRozan's 1st step is extremely quick, he can still leave him in the dust..

DeRozan is getting the max because a ton of teams will have cap-space vs how many max players there are in FA (he would probably get max most years regardless though).

How many teams will have max cap space vs how many max players will be on the market in Hayward's FA year? These things matter.

Does the NBA play one on one? They don't so playing with your teammates is kind of important. I'd take Hayward or Derozan all day long. His lack of shooting makes it tough for him to make his teammates better.

the cap will also be 10-15% higher the year Hayward is a FA. I think both guys get the max and Hayward's deal may be bigger because of cap mechanics.

I think Hayward is the better overall player. As for who beats who one on one...who cares? The game isn't played one on one.

I do think it is something to keep an eye on. I wonder if there are a lot of teams that go crazy with the extra cap space this summer and then there will be relatively few teams that would have enough for Hayward the following summer.

DeMar averages 18.1 ppg, with all 29 teams in a six point range (15-21)
Gordon averages 14.6 ppg, with all 29 teams in a six point range (11.5-17.5)

Difference is that DeMar scores more, not a variation issue where DeMar has fewer matchup problems.

Thanks for the list, but why exactly did you post it?

Read the thread......

How much money a player gets is directly tied to what else is available on the market and how many teams have money.

Example (simplified): If 9 teams have money available to offer a max contract and there are 10 players worthy of the max, one player is most likely not getting the max.

So the list was a ranking then?

I think Hayward is the better player. To say that Derozan is the best player on a 50 win team is ignoring that there are players better than him and as good as him on the same team. Hayward is very clearly the Jazz best player, with Favors second.

Also, Derozan can't shoot. That is huge.

Derozan will get the max, and so will Hayward, but it's not because they are as good as each other, it's because the salary structure and who has money.

Someone will pay for talent. When you have top 40 players in the league, they are probably getting the max, as teams can have a couple max players, especially when they are young and don't get the full veteran max.
