The elderly in the US are overwhelmingly vaccinated which means those getting sick are a younger demographic more able to fight off the infection. That isn't to say it isn't dangerous because it is but hospitals aren't filled. ICU's aren't filled. Bodies aren't filling refrigerated trucks in the parking lot for lack of any place else to put them.

I don't think eradication of COVID-19 is possible - monitor and control the best we can, but the hope has to be to cripple variants from continuing at the speed of which we're seeing.
