What's new

Would you rather have Hayward or Matthews?

Last year Hayward shot 43.5 % on FG, 41.5 % on 3pt shooting. Matthews was 43.6 % on FG and 39.6 % on 3pt shooting. The year before Hayward was 45.6 % FG and 34.6% 3pt. Matthews was 41.2 % FG and 38.3 % 3pt.

Matthews is tearing it up, but its only been 1/4 of the way through the season, and he is a 3rd option on a good team. Hayward has been inconsistent, and at times bad, but he has been the first and possibly only real option for much of the season on a bad team.

All in all they are pretty close, and have different strengths/weaknesses. I like Haywards upside and think he will improve. Matthews is a great role player who plays good defense, but he is in his prime right now and is a great fit in Portland.

not to mention hayward is still only 23 years old. wessy is in his prime at 27. Thats a pretty big difference

I love me some Wes Matthews, but he is a role player, and Hayward has he chance to be better than a role player.

Anyone who says that Hayward can't be better than a role player is speaking from emotions and is ignoring the facts. Hayward is young, and figuring out how to play big minutes in a featured role. I believe he will, provided the right coaching situation, figure out how to be a more efficient scorer and be a very valuable piece for a playoff team.

I don't see it. Dude's a solid starter like Wes. Nothing more.

Coming from anyone else, I would disagree. But you have a view that seems unattached to emotions, so your opinion is more credible.

I definitely don't see a superstar in Hayward, but borderline all star is not out of the question in my mind. He does always come on strong in the second half of the season so maybe there will be a different tune on the board about Hayward in April than there is now.

Your numbers are bad. Matthews is currently making 7 mill a year and Hayward is not going to be renewed at 11 mil a year imo.

You're right, sorry. 6-7 mil a year vs 10 mil (at the very least). Hayward can be a better player but I'm not sure if he's worth the 3 mil more a year.

I always hear Wes got a front loaded contract and I saw in year 1 he was getting paid around 5 mil, so I assumed it never increased since then. He got around a 5.5 mil signing bonus when he signed the contract and the cap hit of that has been spread through the entirety of his contract. He's getting paid 5mil but the cap hit is 6.8 this year.

Hayward has good role player 3rd option written all over him. He still could bust through, and take a giant leap forward.

If you pay him before he has though you are taking a risk. I commend the Jazz FO for this. They know what they have with Hay. There is no way if they were 100% sold on him as a cornerstone they wouldn't have offered him more.

All of my buddies in Portland hated Wes every year he was in Portland until this year. He would force shots and sometimes disappear in games(this is what I was told, havent actually seen it for myself). This year the dude has been money. Portland loves him now, but they always haven't.
That being said I really wish we could've kept Wes

Thanks for mentioning the signing bonus, I had forgotten about that.

Another thing, though--why are we comparing Matthews' contract THIS year with Hayward's contract NEXT year? If this were Matthews' contract year (perhaps it is, I'm not sure), don't you think he'd be re-signed for MORE than $6.9 million per year? THAT's the figure that should be used in comparison, if we're talking about what the Jazz can/will/should re-sign Hayward for.

No dude, people are trying to be negative and depressed right now.

A few things:
1. Cap hit for Matthews in 2013- 6.8 Million
Cap hit for Hayward- 3.4 Million.
Over the last 3 years Hayward has been a MUCH better deal. Next year is the last year of Matthews deal. He will make 7.2 million. If he is better than Hayward, he will make more than Hayward.
2. Paying Matthews what he wanted when he left would have put us well over the salary cap, costing much more than 7 million.
3. He was pretty darn quick to run to Portland and sign a cap killing contract. Screw him. If not for the jazz he would be stocking groceries somewhere.
4. I don't have to respect him or cheer for him. He plays for the Blazers. Except when they are playing Golden State, I wish that franchise nothing but eternal woe and misery. May Paul Allen go bankrupt and the Blazers be forced to move to Seattle. I may even hate them worse than the Lakers. Matthews chose to play for them. So screw him until he chooses to play elsewhere. Better be watching out for those knees. . .

Will not keeping Wes go down as KOC's biggest (public) mistake?

Nothing comes close (since that decision was coupled with the Al Anquisition).

Not true. Wes wanted to stay with the Jazz but they wouldn't negotiate with his agent. Both Jerry and Deron were PO'd about this, and as I said in the past, this led to the dismantling of the team, the resignation of Jerry and trading of Deron -- I got the word from an insider about Jerry feelings on this, a guy who is a close friend and played with him with the Bulls, Clifford Ray, who just so happened to belong to the same gym as me.

Wes is getting paid 5 Million... Hayward is demanding more than 10 Million... Thoughts? I personally would rather have Matthews.

10 mil is too much for Hayward and the answer depends on the roster. Hayward is more talented than wes ( court vision, ball handling, versatility, scoring) but he's not good enough to get the money he wishes for. He can shine with a complementary role at a champion roster under an experienced coaching. He just needs to be 3rd guy on offense knockin down 3's, PnR assists, rebounds etc.
