Your takeaway from the NBA draft

I was surprised that we drafted two guards and both in the 6'3" range. I even heard Mitchell referred to as 6'2". I know he's got an impressive wingspan and hops but we can't possibly be thinking in terms of using him solely as a shooting guard at that height could we? Then there's NWG which had a pretty impressive run on the college team with the best season record. So what does that mean as far as our pursuit of Hill resigning? And how about minutes for Exum or the immediate future of Mack or Neto in the organization? So why all the point/combo guards to the exclusion of other areas of concern.

I like the picks talentwise, and particularly see the utility of Bradley which I suspect will beat out Withey who I've always said was too soft to hit anybody but his girlfriend. But didn't anybody besides myself think we might draft at least one forward? I mean we've currently got Hayward and Ingles and old man Joe Johnson at small forward and Hayward may already be packing his bags. Is there another free agent out there to replace him if we do lose him? I mean Butler is off the board so that would be a stinger now I imagine. Then there's the departure of Lyles where I think Joe Johnson is a better fit to spell Favors at the power forward position than Hayward at the small forward position. Does all this mean that the organization envisions an expanded role for Joel Bolomboy?

So anybody else surprised, chagrined or excited about this draft selection haul? What do you make of it?

Pick #55 means nothing about future of any player on the team. They're just hoping that find someone who can exceed expectations.

One takeaway for me is that it's much more exciting to have the team target specific players and then make trades to get them, than to stand pat and settle for BPA at that draft position. Hopefully things work out well.

I like the draft. I had stated I wanted us to draft players who can at least play defense. That's Mitchell. Playing good defense will get you on the floor, even as a rookie (just ask Ronnie Brewer). Mitchell is ready to step in and help us now.

Bradley should have stayed in school for another year but it's cool he didn't because now we have him. Since he's fundamentally sound I think he'll both learn and improve quickly. I don't expect a lot from his this year but do expect to see flashes.

I'm fine with the Goss pick. I know he'll be better than Paige (which isn't saying much, I know). I wouldn't be surprised if Goss played really well in the summer league. He's older and he'll get the system down quickly. Of course, adjusting to the actual season will be the real test. Some draft websites have compared Williams-Goss to George Hill (and this is prior to the draft) and so I understand why he was chosen.

Yeah I see what you're saying - best player available regardless of position (I assume). But still he could really shake things up if he starts abusing Mack and Neto in practice or has a stellar Summer League campaign. As somebody else said, I think his game is a lot more refined than Paige's (another guy that's got to be shaking his head at our draft).

Good point colton and I agree to an extent. I really liked this year that our first rounders are such defensive standouts and have a little brawn to go with it. The same could be said of Williams Goss to an extent as well. I've felt for awhile that this team lacked toughness and DL seemed to address that in this draft. Still when we traded up for Mitchell a 6'2" or 6'3" combo guard that led his team in scoring I was reminded a bit of Jimmer who never found his niche in this league. (I know, no comparison, Fredette couldn't guard a crosswalk). Still I think that kid Lydon might have been a better fit for us in terms of position particularly with Teodosic possibly also coming in http://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/u...-the-top-international-players-on-the-market/.

Excellent post Kabenac and I couldn't agree more particularly concerning Bradley who I think will be the biggest coup this season. As far as the other two, I think we may have to have a fire sale of point guards if Teodosic is really on his way over, http://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/u...-the-top-international-players-on-the-market/. Can he replace Hill as our starter, I guess that's the question.

We'd want our defensive liabilities facing 2nd units so no to the russian being a starter

Exum and Mitchell on the perimeter will be lockdown defenders vs. most opposing backcourts. The draft was consistent with the team's defensive identity anchored by Gobert. Honestly, Mitchell is as good a fit for the Jazz as anyone picked outside the top 10. Monk and Kennard are great shooters, but questionable defenders and limited as PGs.

The Jazz will groom Bradley as a smooth fundamentally sound big in the mold of Lamarcus Aldridge. He needs to develop his body, but he has double-double potential and may be more than just a back-up.

Agree.
Takeaway from the draft:

1. Needed an eventual upgrade over Withey. Got that. But will Bradley be able to contribute right away or will he spend the year in the G League? Could potentially sign Withey for another year. If healthy, Favs gets the backup mins at the 5. But if either miss games, Jazz are thin.
2. Mitchell may/may not contribute mins at the point. Jazz probably believe he can eventually.

PG: Hill (or other vet) and Exum split minutes; Neto (3rd string); NWG (2way contract). Mack is gone. Year after, Neto is gone.

Wings: have an abundance if Hayward re-signs. Predict Jazz will try to keep Ingles.
Also both Hill and Exum can play off the ball.

I like that DL aggressively went afte Mitchell and Bradley, both appear to have a defensive mindset that'll fit well with what the Jazz are doing. I think Mitchell will see the floor more than Bradley this season. Mitchell can be a good energy guy you bring in to play some perimeter d especially after a back to back. If he's passable as a 3 pt shooter he could see some more minutes. His handles need some work so he'll probably end up playing off the ball this year.

The Jazz felt their two biggest positions of need where a backup big man and someone who could either replace Exum, Hood, or provide another young exciting player to keep fan's optimism for the future high if Hayward decides to leave.

Hayward stays, Mitchell can replace Hood or Exum if the Jazz can't afford to keep both.

Hayward leaves, Mitchell provides an exciting young player for fans to be optimistic about.

Kills two birds with one stone.

Thanks! I appreciate that. With Mack and Hill gone they may still keep Neto. I think they'll definitely hold onto Exum as he was the 5th pick and trading him would be like admitting failure (5th is a lot diff from Lyles at 12). I think there's more moves to come. The cool thing is if we do sign Teodosic we have different types of PGs now - all are amazingly different from one another. If Hayward leaves we definitely need a scorer.

I like your confidence Catchall and also the reference to Aldridge. I think this kid can play some four - love that stroke from the Jazz workout. Like what you said about Mitchell as well though I do worry about the height thing at the two. Gotta see it to believe it I guess.

Think you nailed compadre. I do hope NWG gets a fair shake (two way contract if he earns it) cause he's an intriguing prospect from my perspective.

Well reasoned argument sir. What about the four if Favors gets gimpy kneed again? I do like our picks but sometimes think that Snyder has a point guard fetish.

I hope so. He is an exciting player to watch with charisma to boot. Did you see those alley-oops? Freakish!!!

Jazz approached the whole thing 100% from the angle of BPA/as though they didn't already have a team.

Interpret that how you want.
