What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

I suppose we could match salary by trading Exum, Crowder, Korver, Bradley, and Neto, but that'd be a lot more stupid than just trading Favors and Exum.

If Favors isn't in the discussions that means any trade before free agency would end up like the Lakers/Pelicans trade. It would be agreed upon in principle but couldn't be officially completed until after free agency begins. And Utah would have to renounce Favs and Rubio for it to go through.

Its fun to talk about all these scenarios, but in all reality I would not want the GM job for the Jazz.

They are fighting an uphill battle to get guys to come here, they suddenly have few assets and ownership is conservative. Worst of all, the GM can overcome all those things, and achieve more than anyone expected but still builds a team that finishes 10th in the stacked west.

I appreciate the Jazz keep swinging instead of giving up, but wow.

I don't mean the Conley trade, I mean the fact that we're not including him in the deal to Memphis. We're delusional.

Not necessarily. Utah can create a tuckfon of cap quickly and can simply eat Conley's contract for picks/talent after FA starts, while still having some cash left over for roster needs (stretch four, backup PG, etc.). It simply depends when the deal happens.

Perhaps. I just seem to read that as "OMG we've gotta keep Favors at all costs" kind of reasoning. Perhaps it means waiving his non-guaranteed, but I'm inclined to believe DL is nervously sitting on a toilet somewhere thinking "but Favors is a part of the solution."

We've all done the math. So follow me here:

$33 million (cap space after renouncing Rubio, Thabo, Udoh and pretty sure Neto)
-$18 million (Favors)
= $15 million (July cap space)

Conley is $32.5 (starting July 1)

Exum is $9.6
Korver, if guaranteed, is $7.5
Bradley is $2
= $19 million

I'm pretty sure that in July we could trade Exum, Korver, Bradley and whatever pick for Conley

$15 million of cap space
+
$19 million (Ex, KK, TB)
=
$34 million

We would add Conley and keep Favors AND Crowder. In my mind, this is the only way Conley makes sense. If we only gave up Exum, #23, TB and Korver, it's a great trade. Outside of that, especially a future 1st too, screw that.
