What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

I trust the Shams and Woj'es of the world. The glorified beat writers and/or the Athletic guys don't have the same caliber of sources. Tony, Locke, Larsen, Spence, etc. can speculate but they don't know there the Jazz offseason is going.

And the Jazz did the deal for flexibility this year. If the information they are getting back is "Hey, none of these dudes want to sign here" then there isnt much they can do about it. They took the risk and it didnt pay off.
There are more than 5 guys worth signing. There are dozens of options better than being the last team to believe in a basketball philosophy that has been roundly disproven as a true winning strategy.

I’ll be happy for a handful more of 50-win seasons, no trips to the WCF or beyond, and Gobert and Mitchell bouncing if the Jazz show some steel for ****ing once. If they don’t, then those results don’t really mean **** to me. Furthermore, I am entirely skeptical that Favors really improves the team that much given the known-issues with the fit.

I mean those guys report **** when it happens, but if you follow Tony and Locke you can get some nuggets of what will happen. Friggin Locke has basically telegraphed our damn first round picks for like 5 years now. Tony is tight with Favs... he also doesn't speculate much... so if he does it is usually sourced in some form or fashion. Spence ain't know ****.

you so need to churn parts of the roster to find diamonds. Say we opted for cap space last summer to sign Bogdon Bogdonovic to a ludicrous 4/$60M deal... that deal would look amazing right now. If we can get the guy there is value in getting 2 guys or 3 guys on long term deals in hopes one of them pops and the others are at least solid.

I'd rather have Kelly Oubre over Lamb. Convince me I'm stupid to feel this way ...

I would as well. Oubre is a RFA though so they will probably match unless we over pay for him. But I think he is worth 15 mil.

Stats wise they are very similar. But Oubre is 3 years younger, taller, more athletic and a better more versatile defender.

The next story the keep Favs crowd will sell is that he's a trade asset... Is he? Cuz dude been on the trade block in perpetuity and we haven't gotten an offer good enough to pull the trigger.

Just because we didnt trade him doesnt mean we didnt get offers. He also has had health concerns for 3 seasons. This is his first healthy year in awhile and he performed very well. His value has gone up now and even more so since the trade deadline. I also dont believe he has been on the block. Those were just rumors that he was involved in trade proposals. But the Jazz never talk about that stuff so it probably isnt accurate.

Don’t think it’s stupid... Oubre has some physical tools and is young... Lamb is a much better player at this point. Kelly has a bigger upside but I kind of see what @Saint Cy of JFC sees in Lamb when I squint a little... is he a guy that has now matured and there is more there? I think he’s had opportunity but not in a super great coaching environment and their bigs are trash... so maybe with Rudy screens it open things up.

I’m not confident in either guy but I’m cool spending on wings.

Yeah, I was thinking, why don't we overpay Oubre if the Sun's won't match, but then I thought I was missing something important, because no one else said anything. I figure that every single player on the Suns is better than what they have shown, save Booker who is probably a little worse.

Been healthy two years in a row... been on the block for a few years. No trade that knocks our socks off has come. He was involved in the Conley deal that fell through (maybe not, but would have been hard to match salary without him and Exum).

If we could have received a first for him I think we would have done it. If we could have received Conley we would have done it. I just think bigs who can't shoot or dribble will have a limited market. If we were this big of Favs fans we could have easily given him a multi year deal last year that had a lower cap number that makes it easier to find that other piece. If he was on the books at $12M for next year you can waive and stretch Korver and make some max offers... might have to move Jae into someone's space.

The other thing it does is makes it tough to get a really good stretch 4 because they know they are likely not starting if Favs is here.

If we somehow landed Conley without Favs in the deal then it could work and I'm fine keeping him if they can't figure other stuff out.

Yeah, I'm not super confident in either, but I feel like Oubre is a younger version with better physical profile and I think there is unexplored potential in him. He's always been on dysfunctional teams and he was starting to figure it out before the end of the season with Igor. I think he's probably going to cost less than Lamb and if we are going to be betting on a non-premium talent, I'd rather go for the younger one that probably has higher upside.

I think they'd likely match anything reasonable. He's a bit of a shot hunter for me, but his efficiency wasn't awful. He's been in Washington and Phoenix so he might be good, but he also may have too many losing habits at this point. I could see him being good or I could see him being Andrew Wiggins, but with a little more competitive fire.

If he was unrestricted I might put him above Lamb... IDK both are just frightening depending on contract.
