What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

This is why Kevin Love is our backup if we don't get Conley. The FO may not even know that yet.

If Kevin Love is the backup plan I’m cool throwing two firsts for Conley...

Conley would be huge... I understand the frustration... Hill Rubio now Conley... Conley is by far the best of those guys and it ain’t close... those guys both came in and had huge years in our system... Conley would be so damned good for us... getting him for a late first will be looked at like highway robbery by mid season.

Don't worry. We'll wait free agency out because it wouldn't be until the 6th/7th until we made the trade.

If we're lucky, we'll trade a conditional first rounder that turns into second rounders, and they'll trade us back the second rounders we gave them. Our conditional pick reverts back to those second rounders if not conveyed.

We could easily get a guy like Niko in free agency. If he was the primary target... would be a decent value compared to what the max guys will get. So we still can be a free agent player if we put Exum, Bradley, 1st and maybe Korver or Crowder in the deal. But we’d actually be playing in a game we’d be likely to win. Playmaking perimeter player is the biggest need... and honestly I’m not into Russell at all... I think he will end up being bad money on his next deal.

What do you guys think about this type of scenario:

I'm trying to figure out if Gallo+Conley to the Jazz scenario is possible(LAC will need to get rid off Gallo for another max slot)...

if we stretch Korver and renounce all the FAs we are at 19.2M of capspace. Gallo's salary is 22.6 so we need about 3.4 more... we don't have a contract like that so... we probably will have to send Crowder or Exum away for nothing somewhere. Lets say Crowder for pure capspace...somewhere... I think someone will pick him up and might even give up some small compensation for him(similar to the Bradley for Morris deal BOS did when they needed to clear capspace for Hayward).

So we are at about 27M of capspace. We absorb Gallinari into that capspace.

And now we trade future draft compensation+Favors+Exum(27.25M) for Conley(32.5M)... this one should be legal... right?

What we are left with:

PG: Mike Conley, Raul Neto, ???
SG: Donovan Mitchell, Grayson Allen, ???
SF: Joe Ingles, Royce O'Neale, ???
PF: Danilo Gallinari, Georges Niang, ???
C: Rudy Gobert, Tony Bradley, ???

We pretty much gut any depth we have, but the starting lineup looks good. The ??? will have to be filled with the draft picks(23 and 53), room MLE and other vet minimum contracts.

A lot of the talk yesterday around the AD trade was whether New Orleans would need the trade completed July 6th or July 30th. The Lakers are going to have a lot less cap space because that trade is going to be completed July 6th. If you could agree to a Conley trade and push it until July 30th, that would open up some possibilities in free agency.

Utah can create about 35.8m by releasing our capholds, waiving/stretching Korver and the rest of our extraneous player (minus Royce and Niang, of course).

Yes, but I'm trying to get both Gallo and Conley on the Jazz. You will need capspace to absorb Gallo and Favors' contract in order to trade for Conley.

I think the simplest path to significant improvement is renouncing everyone, mostly-absorbing Conley (that’s our major asset, matching salaries with vets and whatever is garbage for Memphis) but sending Exum, stretching Korver, then using that ~$15 million to answer the PF question and fill out the roster with whatever remaining cap, room MLE, and/or BAE (you bet your *** I’m gunning for Caruso with that).
