What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Ultimately the situation with Favors is a catch 22. I'm positive that the Jazz have had a lot of the same discussions internally that some people have posted here about why we should move on from Favors. I think they see that paying him 16/17 million a year to essentially play backup minutes isn't ideal. I think that they also see that the offense needs more pop than last years team provided and that better spacing is critical. But the catch is finding a move that actually makes us better if we let Favors go. Because despite the issues we have with Favors.... he's still really freaking good. And I think the addition of Conley complicated the decision further because Conley upgrades our offense and our spacing more than any addition we've ever made to this current core. So they have to ask themselves if adding Conley is enough of answer for our offense that it makes keeping Favors work for us or not.

I'm interested to see the decision they come too. A lot of us feel like the decision is black or white. But I see why it's tough.
would Old-School rep this.

This is a fun game, I think I keep Favors and try and sign Avery Bradley and Wilson Chandler for vet min. Then use the Room exception on JaMychal Green.

But I also think those prices are off on a bunch of players but wow would that be great to get those three and keep who we have.

Conley Exum Neto
Mitchell Bradley
Ingles Royce Chandler
Favors JaMychal
Gobert Favors Bradley

Fill in our our 2nds and whoever else makes the team.

This is a good example though that lots of good players will go for much less. Teams will tie their cap up quickly with the big names. Lots of good players for cheap on here.

Also I know Middleton will get the max but that is a bad contract. 4 years 190 million is way too much for a borderline all-star.

I like Kevon Looney as a backup 4/5. He actually has some shooting ability that he didn't get to show at Golden State, imo. I also like Terrence Ross as instant offense.

Something that Favors and Gobert frontcourt allows us is to be able to not be so much exposed by stretch big, especially stretch-5, as we could see Favors getting them outside (or if they force Gobert out, there's still Favors rim protection).

Not as if we are trying to be able to face (on the playoffs) teams that may have AD, Jokic, Gasol, Lopez...

Opportunity costs vs loyalty, familiarity and "he's such a good guy".

I love Favs. But not at 18 millions with the chance he walks next summer anyway.

My prediction....Jazz have already shown they at this time value improvement over loyalty. So Derek will join Jae, Ricky, Kyle and Grayson in the "Former Jazzmen" club.

After thinking about it, I'm thinking that the Jazz will guarantee Favors as a last resort, and not do the PR thing of only letting him go unless they get a gamechanger. If we guarantee Favors, we have the room exception and a ton of minimums. Right off the bat, that's not ideal. Add to that teams who strike out on the blue chip free agents (Knicks probably, Clippers maybe). I think those teams will be paying these "minimum" guys more than the minimum on one year deals and then testing the free agent market in 2020. Add to that teams in more desirable markets who will be trying to contend, and who will also be signing minimum guys, (LAL, LAC maybe, BKN, GSW hoping Klay comes back for the playoffs, Boston, Philly, Toronto, Houston just to name a few...) and the pool of minimum players who we can sign shrinks significantly. So not only would we have to fill our roster with minimum contracts, but we might be getting the bottom of the barrel minimum guys.

I'm not worried about this front office struggling to find solid players who can contribute on minimum contracts if that's what we need to do. One of the strengths of this front office has been finding diamonds in the rough. Joe Ingles, Royce O'neale, Ekpe Udoh, etc.

I think that the Jazz have a list of players that they feel improve the team more than Favors. If they can get those players they will. If they cannot they will re-up Favors.

Even if they bring Favors back, it doesn't mean he will stay. In most every scenario his contract gains value bc as the season goes on.

Well, what happened is that Gordon Hayward left the Jazz in free agency and prevented the Jazz from signing another offensively skilled player. So DL pivoted, decided that defense was our identity, and he brought in guys like Royce, Thabo, Udoh and Jerebko. Prior to that, the Jazz had offensive talent like Hayward, Hill, Joe Johnson and Rodney Hood. That first year after Hayward left, the Jazz's offense was like 22nd in the league, and we started relying almost entirely on Joe Ingles and Donovan Mitchell.

We've been recovering from that ever since.
Except... that's not true.

The Jazz offense was no. 12 at 109.0 ORTG the last year with Haywood.
The Jazz offense was no. 16 at 107.4 ORTG the first year without Haywood.
The Jazz offense was no. 14 at 110.3 ORTG this last year...

So as an absolute value we had better offense this year than the last year with Haywood. As a relative to the league it was almost the same 12 vs 14 ...

This is why I've been saying that IMO Quin gets too much credit for our defense and not enough credit for our offense. Our defense is to a large degree Rudy-dependent. We've seen it time and time again - we are amazing when Rudy's playing and we completely crumble when he's injured. On the other hand I think Quin is doing miracles with incredibly limited offensive talent. This roster has no business being middle of the league offensively with 3 non-shooters starting for you and a grand total of 1 (ONE!!!!!) player on the entire roster who can reliably create a shot for himself.

Favors has been in the trade block for 12 years. His contract last year had more value than this year. His contract value decreases as the season goes on... it’s an expiring... why they hell would it gain value?

We need to trade Favors the absolute best value we can get. He gets his option picked up (which he says matters a lot to him), and we get something rather than losing it for nothing.

Don't teams often want expiring contracts to free up money for free agency the next summer or simply if they are in cap hell?
