What's new

Zach Lowe tells Utah (and a couple other teams) what to do in free agency

How many of the "lets go but someone because- SALE!!!" bitched about AK47's contract. While you are building (we still are building) flexibility is important. It's not like we have a giftcard that is expiring. That money would be useful next year too, especially if we have a hole that we know needs filled. It is a lot easier to get a guy to come in and fill that hole than to "just add talent." Nobody is coming in at 15 million unless we are criminally overpaying them or they are promised a starting spot. Probably both.

It doesn't matter anyway. We are getting Monta Ellis. . .

Its a different environment though. We already have a core and can add to it plus still have max space next year... not that we'd use it but we can keep everyone and build.

You are right that the player probably doesn't sign knowing what he is getting into.

If we sign Ellis I'm going to puke.

Yes it is very much like we have a gift card that is expiring. We have cap room when few teams do. Next year everyone will have room. If we don't spend it this year we will spend it next picking the bottom of the barrel.

Would you rather have Splitter or Pleiss as the back up C?

Splitter is much better, but likely much more expensive. He'd have more trade value...

What if we traded Pliess rights and cap space for Mills and Splitter... I'd be so happy!

Splitter would be a great 3rd big.

Splitter + Mills for $10 million in unguaranteed contracts. Gett'r done.

damnit

I don't think we have $10 million. Spurs gunna have their cake and eat it too. They can probably keep Green if this goes through.

I thought the sum total of all our Millsaps, Bookers, Cottons, etc was over $10 million?? Haven't looked at that lately.

We are close enough and can offer space... Agree now and send cotton... creates a couple trade exceptions (or one trade exception) I'm not sure. We could also move Burke for a second rounder and space or an expiring contract. Philly would likely go for that... they have too many second rounders and could increase Burke's trade value.

its like 8.2... but we could just do it with cap space and Cotton. They may want to keep him and would still save roughly $11M in space... plus with a backup in place could renounce CJ and save another $3M. They could resign CJ after retaining Green and signing Aldridge using a mid level exception... Or just move on.

Splitter and Mills for just capspace is an effing steal... could flip Splitter after other teams miss out on FA targets. I'd add any of our fringy draft assets 2nd rounders and euro dudes.

I'm not sure but I think we can't trade some of those dudes until December

We can trade them whenever we want to... not sure of the guarantee dates on those guys though.

HH is bringing it today. Repped.

Thx NAOS... now I gotta actually work. Jazz should put me on payroll... it'd work out much better for me.
