I just struggle to see how a one-way post-player that has a reputation as being soft and physically weak is supposed to be a particularly helpful piece. Being tall, savvy, and an excellent passer is nice and all, but...

Jazz need a backup C, in Tomic they get one that is better than anything available in FA, is more ready to contribute than any rookie, and doesn't cost any assets to obtain. He'll cost money, but Jazz have more than enough cap space for the next 3 years. Why is that so difficult to understand?

Let me phrase it differently: I'm not sure that he'll be good in the NBA, and I'm even less sure that he's a good fit here.
Saying Tomic is "better than anything in FA" is purely your opinion (again, who's to say his game translates at all in the NBA?) and a free agent signing isn't the only way the Jazz could get one anyway. And what's with this attitude that the Jazz are in the tail-end of annual contention? If anything, one could make the argument that Tomic is too old to grow with this team as a real piece and then the Jazz would have wasted an opportunity to develop a real piece when the time really matters.
Also, isn't 3 years the maximum the Jazz can offer?Isn't everything your stating your opinion also? The reason we are excited is because he has a lot of offensive skill. "In my opinion" he is better than anything available. Money wise probably 6 Million per year, to put that in perspective, Chris Kaman got about 5 Million per from the Blazers, Brandon Bass is at 7 M. Brendon Haywood is at 8 M. We had to pay 5 Million per for Booker, who is a short PF who hasn't done much either. 28 is plenty young to contribute for 4-5 years, Ingles is 27, so is Milsap. We can get players in other ways yes, but that involves giving up assets, and for anyone thats any good, it will be something significant. He's a third big, he doesn't have to be the second coming of Pau Gasol. 6 Million is going to be nothing with the new salary cap.
Who says the Jazz are at the tail end of contention? When I say 3 years, its because they have almost everyone under contract for that time. Who knows what the team will look like after that.
Could all this new Tomic news be the Jazz throwing out blinders so nobody trades up and nabs the big they want to draft at #12?
My philosophy for team building is that you should acquire the highest level player that you can, put them together with the coaching staff and have them compete for jobs and playing time. I just want the best players Utah can get from each transaction they make.I wanted Tomic to come earlier then felt burned when he agreed to an extension. Still a sour taste in my mouth for being such a tease for so long. Hard to know how to feel about this when I've gotten all high on Kaminsky (because we are in dire need of shooting, spacing and scoring).

Tomic right now is a dead asset. If we tried to trade his rights would we get anything other than a 2nd rounder?
In the Jazz offense, what does Gobert do? He comes out to the top of the key to take the ball and then looks to pass and rolls to the basket. Seems like a pretty good way to use Tomic since he is a great passer and pretty good going to the basket. Ante passes off, rolls to the basket, gets the return pass and then finds a cutter for an easy basket. Or takes it in himself. I see his skills being a good fit as a backup 5.
AS you said, he'd be a relative bargain at whatever price they sign him for. If he doesn't pan out, Utah just plays Favors some at center and uses Booker more (just as they did after the Kanter trade). If he surprises, Utah has a great 1/2 punch in Gobert and Tomic or a very valuable trade asset. Centers are ALWAYS in demand.
