What's new

Jazz's Hornacek officially joins Corbin's staff

Also wanted to add a long with what everybody's feelings of Horny that his dad is also a HC and while that in of its self doesn't mean he'll make a good coach it just shows he's been around it and grew up with it so every little bit helps.

Out of curiosity, why does everyone think Hornacek has what it takes to coach? Is it based in fandom?

Thats what I want to know as well...Obv. I dont know him in real life, but he seems to mild mannered to be a head coach.

Another question...so who is Tyco's asst. coach?

I think it's great that the organization continues to promote from within and Ty is certainly deserving and I think he'll be a great coach, however, part of me wanted to see the Jazz bring in an established coach, e.g., Larry Brown or someone like that. Again, I'm feeling pretty optimistic about Cobrin and how successful he'll be, but I doubt we really see too much change this season.

It's a hunch. Yes, Corbin might grow into the role. But if the Jazz implode and miss the playoffs, there are going to be serious questions about coaching throughout the summer.
You mean if the Jazz keep doing what they have since the losing streak? It's a 50/50 for me if the team makes that playoffs. The coach makes no difference. The problems we have right now will take a considerable amount of time to address.

Strange reaction to the 2nd coaching change since 1981. I wonder how other fans react to their more frequent coaching changes???

Horny also deserves credit as a shooting coach. Something this team desperately needs!

*EDIT* Ty says "We will have Jeff for the remainder of the year."
It sounds like this is not a long term move at this point.

Now they should get the Mailman as the other assistant.
That would be hilarious, and would be pure enjoyment for all while he is on the staff.
We also need the Mailman to help the players get back to playing "old school".

This is my biggest question. He's very well composed when handling people/media, but I wonder if he's too lighthearted and easy going for the top spot.

Head coaches must demand respect to counter the power the players hold. They have to be iconic and maintain that reputation to be successful in the NBA. Lakers, for instance, do a great job of keeping respect for the head honcho's in the back of the player's minds. See Dork Fisher's response to Jerry West calling the team out on defensive effort. That team acts like they worship ownership and management. That's not an easy thing to get out of MVP's and the like.

My optimism on Horny is based off a combination of his high-basketball IQ, his understanding of Jazz basketball as well as the fact he spent a formidable portion of his career elsewhere (nice blend of Sloan and Cotton Fitzsimmons' philosophy), his personable nature (all the Jazz players liked working with him as shooting coach), and the fact that he's reverred by Jazz fans everywhere - young players are more apt to listen to him than joe-schmo.

Also no bigger Gordon Chiesa fan than myself, seems somewhat realistic since Corbin played for Gordy as well as coached with him during his first season in Utah. If the Jazz can't get Gordy this season, I'd look into getting someone like Kenny Natt for the remainder of the season, because the thing that worries me the most is the lack of experience on this staff - and should Utah make the postseason, I think that's something that could severely hinder them in the playoffs. I understand Ty doesn't want to have an abrupt shakeup bringing in an outsider, but it would be nice to have someone with Natt's experience on the bench.

I also thought of Natt but I thought he was still employed by an NBA team, if not and they don't think waiting for Chiesa (assuming he wants to come back) is as good of an option then ya I'm all for that.

One other option that just popped into my head if you strictly looking for Utah ties and knowing the system would be the old Flash coach who was somehow related to Sloan if I remember right.
*edit looked up his name and it is Brad Jones*

I don't think Natt's been in the league since serving as Sacramento's interim coach (ironically after Reggie Theus was fired).

Great move. Hornacek lends credibilty to the coaching staff and is a fan favorite.

I hope they find some room somewhere for Gordon Chiesa in the organization. He has maintained his local ties even though he works for the Memphis Grizzlies. He has good energy and is a good communicator. Jazz could use some positive energy and and good communication right now. I think he could really help Deron develop better people skills.

I completely agree! I have been telling people our defense hasn't been the same since Gordon Chiesa left. He was great with the players. I love when they have him on they radio and he explains basketball.

I'm not too worried about Hornacek's personality since he's not the Lead Dog. I liken his presence to having a good hitting coach. Jeff Hornacek watching everybody shoot night after night is money well spent. He's also a good set of eyes to have around for the offense. I'm a lot more interested to see who Corbin brings in (if anyone) for defense. And lets face it, we're going to have to go outside the organization for that hire.

So this team is gonna be lead by a full staff of newbies huh. I hope assistant number 3 is someone with a lot of experience, a decade +

Sounds like we may not make another official assistant hire until next season (if there is one). Corbin talked about how all 3 coaches will have to work their tales off.

Another solid post from Billy....

You can't rank a person's fire and passion by how they interact with the media. He was a passionate player, and I have no doubt that passion would translate to his coaching.

I think they should take a chance on this guy that used to be the assistant coach on some of the best defensive teams of the last 20 years. I think his name is Thoroughbred or something.

LOL another hometown connection...

I've always liked him, besides my brother played against him in junior high and high school

and how can you not like a good Czech like Horny?
