Also, people don't realize that WES MATTHEWS MADE THE SINGLE LARGEST CONTRACT IN NBA HISTORY FOR A SECOND YEAR PLAYER. EVER!!! We didn't match an albatross of a contract and we all regret it. But it was significantly larger than the next closest 2nd year salary. He was paid more than any #1 draft pick in his second year EVER!!! That's why we didn't match. I think it sucked... but it needs to be a major consideration coming from the 'why didn't we keep Matthews' converstationalists.
I'm not looking to have the conversation, but I'm just saying there was a reason D-Will was frustrated because the team took HUGE steps back. The writing was on the wall. The Jazz would have never contended for anything with Jefferson in the starting lineup and without legit wing players. I would have been pissed as **** too if I where D-Will.
I just dont think the narrative that D-Will ruined the Jazz is the right one. The FO ruined the Jazz and Sloan quit.
Let's not forget D-Will's ultra-pissy attitude leading up to the ouster of Sloan. He was sabotaging the team while Miller and O'Conner were afraid to put him in check. At that point Sloan's hands were tied, and Williams became the head coach.
I think nearly everyone agrees that if the Jazz front office hadn't sided with a player over their head coach Sloan would have stuck around till the end of the season. They forced him out.

Williams will never be the player he was. Here's why:
In 2010 he covered up his "No Guts No Glory" tattoos. Ever since then he hasn't played with the same heart he used to.

After missing a game with a sprained medial collateral ligament, Deron Williams was back in the starting lineup and finished with 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds in 31 minutes. He had just one turnover. He is not, however, full strength. "I'm always concerned when a knee is involved," he said. "Knees are scary. It's still not 100 percent. It's still a little sore. But they say that's common with MCL's so it's something I'm going to have to deal with for a little bit. It's not at risk of anything bigger, so that's good."

His first 5 years with the Jazz DWill played with heart. He never made excuses. "No guts no glory" was fitting of the way he played. Somewhere along the line he decided he needed to protect his body in order to make his career last longer. He lost an edge and hasn't been as good.

That's easy to say, but the deal seemed ludicrous at the time to anyone that wasn't writing the check. Had they not dumped close to $30 million onto AK (who they refused to do anything serious about his bull ****/insane salary) and Memo (who they simply did not have to extend and simply should not have and that was obvious to at least me on the outset), maybe they match. Maybe they keep Boozer instead of go after Big Al (say what you want about his character, but he was twice the player Slow Al was).
AK and Memo are the reasons the Jazz HAD to re-tool suddenly. You're right, the organization created the foundation for all of the problems that followed.

A lot of people need to stop looking at Jazz stuff with blinders on.
Not everything the front office does is great. Sloan was not a perfect coach.
It wasnt even about Big Al sucking (which he did). It was just such a clear and obvious bad fit. Even if Al was really good, he would have never meshed with Sloan/Dwill's offense (even if those two were BFF's).
