What's new

Pick is Gordon Hayward; ESA crowd boos

Why would I do that when the link I provided shows those mocks and 9 others?

Take the average of the draft position from all your mocks you provided. You're falling on your own sword here Darkwing, better quit while you're ahead. The avg. position for Hayward was #13.

You might understand better why most of us are so pissed.

There are twelve there. Several at #9 AND #10.

Several at 9? Are you posting the correct link?

Out of 12 mock drafts, I see 1 had him at 8, 1 at 9, and the other 10 mocks all had him lower than the Jazz pick.

And that is based on talent. When you factor in team needs, this pick is crazy. And when you factor in that Okur had a possible career ending injury and Boozer is a free agent, this pick is worthy of someone being fired. And then we can start talking about how just a few months ago we gave away Brewer (a lottery pick himself) for nothing because we supposedly had so much depth at that position.

Unbelievable.

You said "nearly as high." 4 picks away from the mean is not "nearly as high" especially when the range starts at #8 and you're picking at #9. It's not that big of a reach. Complaining that he was picked way ahead of where anyone else had him is downright false.

Any other pick would have been in the same range as Hayward, projected higher than he went since the first 8 went so predictably. At that point, I'd go BPA. Whether or not you think Hayward is BPA is not what I'm arguing against. If you think that, than fine, but picking just for need isn't the best way to draft. The board would be all up in arms about Aldrich or Davis being picked.

And Brewer for nothing is the most laughable thing ever. Nothing? Are you serious? Harpring and Maynor were trading for nothing ('cept money) but the Memphis pick has more value than just money.

Wrong. Someone being projected at 13 getting picked at 9 is absolutely "way ahead" of where he was projected.

What value does the Memphis pick have? You are aware that there is a very good chance it won't even turn into a pick, right? It's lottery protected for a few years, and after the protection runs out we lose the pick. So either it's a late pick (which is unlikely to happen since there are plenty of teams looking to improve) or no pick at all.

And yes, if that turns into no pick at all, then we traded Brewer for nothing.

If that Memphis pick had any value, we would have traded up and got a decent player in this draft.

From what I've read, it doesn't have fully lottery protection. Down to top 10 in its last year. If Memphis finishes in the same slot they did this past year, the Jazz get the pick.

We also booed when Raul Lopez, Curtis Borchart, Mo Almond, and Kosta Koufus were picked. How'd those work out?

the point isn't that we booed because he sucks. We booed because we have much more pressing needs, players available to address those needs, and we ignored them for a player who wasn't picked by anyone to go nearly as high.

Raul Lopez was better than Tony Parker when he was in the NBA.

Borchardt was a choice based on upside and potential, just like most compainers are clamoring for.

We don't know how well Koufos will work out, yet.

Just got home from work, Tivo'd the draft and nearly crapped a ****ing brick when Stern announced our pick. Fire KOC, he's ****ing pathetic, honestly.

I hope you're right - I wouldn't count on it though.

Didn't someone compare him to Luke Jackson on ESPN - got to be the first time ever a top ten pick was compared to a player that wasn't drafted.

Ugh..

Luke Jackson was also a #9 pick, who turned out to be a bust.

We traded Brewer for money - make no mistake. Otherwise we would not give up talent like that. If this pick becomes no pick, we get 3 mil. With that said, there is a pretty good chance we do get a pick from Memphis. Without Brewer though, and with us surely not paying Korver, we actually could use a decent wing player. As you said, AK is pretty much damaged goods - can't stay healthy at all. So, we really have only Miles at SF spot. So, Hayward fits just fine as we need depth with Korver surely leaving. At least at PF we have Millsap, who delivered 18 and 10 as a starter. Miles sure can use some competition. And at C we already have 2 young guys: Koufos and Fess. I don't think these guys are any less talented than anyone who was left on the board at the position. So, from the needs perspective, in light of who was still available, we did all right.

We would have been much better off if we would have drafted a big guy and just kept Korver if we needed another wing. We don't have any options to fill our need for a big man as cheap as keeping Korver would have been.
