Gobert rips teammates

I don't think he was out of line at all. I think the guys know Rudy well enough to know his intent. Seems to me he's trying to motivate them and step up as a more vocal leader (which I wish Hayward would do, but then again I'm not in the locker room to see if he does it there). If people neeed to be called out, hopefully they're mature enough to take it and use it constructively. I'm glad someone was willing to say what needed to be said. This last stretch of games, they haven't been playing Jazz ball. I suspect they know that, but hopefully what Rudy said is enough to light a fire.

The way that I see it Hayward doesn't shoot enough and is the one guy on the team that we need to care about his stats. His goal should be 7 points a quarter. It's kinda the biggest thing that this team needs out of him.

I would like to see him take it to the cup a bit more like Lebron or Harden as he's good at finishing in traffic but beyond that I hate to see anybody forcing it when it just isn't there. He's a bit streaky and I'm not even really sure he's our best Iso option currently. He's a nice player, a deserved allstar, glad we have him, still I don't feel like he's fully invested at times.

I think he was talking about Hill, possibly among others. Hill was not playing well or very hard and didn't seem to care about this game. Hill also had this to say.

How much does homecourt advantage in first round mean to Jazz? "It don't matter," said George Hill, who was minus-29 in loss to Clippers.

That's a real head-scratcher. Must have been taken out of context or something.

I told you guys two years ago this was Gobert's team.
If he didnt realize that roll then, he is certainly stepping into it now.

hi guys,

I'm so glad to find here some positivity about rudy's declarations! you know I have the impression that most of people (just my feeling) in France think that Rudy is just so arrogant (like when he said he thinks he was the best center). We have some press article where people criticize Rudy and say he is not humble enought. As a french and jazz / rudy's fan, I just think that he is the most valuable guy in this team (the guy you can't play without), the heart and the vocal leader. And because he is all these things he have the legitimacy to speak and motivate his teammates. I don't know if Im really objective as rudy's fan thinking that he made the good thing but its good to see you guys encouraging Rudy.

What do you really think about it? Do you think he is arrogant? Just think sometimes people are just jealous and see arrogance instead of confidence.

Once again sorry for my english, but I'm sure you understood what I mean.

On twitter today that the Jazz held a closed team meeting where they talked about "everything" and all got on the same page. Rudy has walked back his comments and the meeting was spun in a positive light (of course).

I don't think he's arrogant. He's confident...there's a difference. He knows he's a great player, but he also knows this is a team sport, and he's trying to motivate the other guys who just aren't cutting it right now. I think we have seen for sure over the last several games that he has the capacity to be our #1 player -- even better if he steps up to be a vocal leader as well. The total package.

Great post. We all love Rudy because of his attitude. He might be a little arrogant, but he backs it up. He's nowhere near the level of annoying arrogance (we're looking at you, Draymond Green)

George Hill on if homecourt matters in the first round: “It doesn’t matter. Wherever we are, we have to win.”

Maybe for him, he's a hardened veteran. For players like Hood, Burks, and possibly Gobert playing a road playoff game will be an atmosphere unlike anything they've seen.
There will be some deer in the headlight effects.

Team meeting after Gobert's remark.

https://www.deseretnews.com/article/865676510/Utah-Jazz-hold-team-meeting-after-Rudy-Goberts-remarks.html

SALT LAKE CITY — Two days after seemingly calling out some teammates for not competing, Rudy Gobert backed off of a strong accusation.

The Stifle Tower’s comments were discussed in a team meeting the Jazz held in the aftermath of their fourth setback in five games, a 108-95 road loss to the Clippers in a game that could come back to hurt their chances to earn home-court advantage in the first round of the upcoming playoffs.

“We discussed everything. I think it was good to talk to each other,” Gobert said at Monday’s shootaround, hours before Utah’s game against New Orleans. “It’s never going to be perfect. It’s great to communicate as a team.”

Gobert, sounding as if he were in damage-control mode, said he didn’t mean to make it sound personal on Saturday in Los Angeles even if his pointed remarks came across that way.

“We've got guys that compete, but some of us don't compete. Some of us just think about scoring," Gobert told ESPN after the loss at Staples Center without naming names.

"That's what it is. Coach keeps repeating it: We've just got to compete. We're too nice. Those guys, we know they're going to get calls. We've just got to come out aggressive and ready to fight."

Gobert admitted he let his emotions get the best of him.

“I was just frustrated after the game,” he said.

The fourth-year center, a rising star in this league, just wants to win, and that game was a big one to lose, especially how Utah struggled in the first and fourth quarters.

“It wasn’t targeting somebody particular. It was more about the team,” the French player said. “Maybe I didn’t choose the best words. It made it look like I was picking on people, but not really. It was more our attitude as a team.”

Gobert also said he’s working on being a better leader and trying to improve on how he communicates with teammates.

“It’s like everything, like on the court, you’ve got to get better at it,” he said. “I’m starting to get better at it.”

Quin Snyder loves that Gobert is passionate and that he speaks what he feels — both to teammates and the media — but the Jazz coach thinks there’s a time and place for calling out guys for not competing. In the locker room after an upsetting loss doesn’t fit the criteria.

“For us to have players that have passion is a good thing,” Snyder said. “We’ve talked about the best way to communication to one another. In that moment, I think Rudy was emotional and enthusiastic after the game.”

Snyder disagrees with the assertion that some of his players weren’t competitive, too. That’s a sore point for the third-year coach in interviews if it’s ever implied by reporters.

“We’ve got guys that compete. If you look at our benchmark for our program, unselfishness and competitiveness are the two things that you hear consistently,” Snyder said. “There’s always going to be times when you want to compete more, compete more consistently, play better.”

He realizes there will be times when players get on each other, too, which goes back to that time and place concept.

“I welcome our guys challenging each other. I’d prefer we do it in ways that I think are more constructive just from a pragmatic standpoint,” Snyder said. “We’re around each other a lot. We have opportunities to talk to each other. I’d like for even more of that to happen during the course of the game to each other.

“The more we learn to communicate, the more we grow. The more competitive we become as a unit, the better we’ll get. Any step we can take in that direction is a good one.”

Snyder has a close relationship with Gobert, so he knows the 24-year-old wants what is best for a Jazz squad that is full of competitive guys.

“We all hold ourselves to standards. Rudy’s not the only one who’s competitive on our team,” Snyder said. “I’m glad that Rudy wants competitiveness. I expect that from all those guys, but Rudy’s not the poster child for competitiveness. He is competitive, but we’ve got other guys on our team that are equally competitive.”

Consider this a learning lesson for a guy who’s quickly turning into an NBA star and one of the leaders, not just defensively, for this emerging Jazz franchise.

“That’s the challenge of being a good teammate is pulling it out of each other. That’s clearly what Rudy was trying to do,” Snyder said. “I know where his heart is. I know how he feels about his teammates. You always want to figure out how you can make each other better; however you can accomplish that, that’s the goal.”

Comment on this story
Third-year NBA wing player Joe Ingles said this wasn’t the first team meeting the Jazz have held. He tried to downplay any controversy around Gobert’s remarks.

“Obviously we’re all together. We’re in it. We win together, lose together,” Ingles said. “It’s just one of those things. Obviously we talk about it, we moved on. At the end of the day we’ve got bigger things we’ve got to worry about.”

So did any good come from the meeting?

“I don’t know,” Gobert said, cracking a slight grin. “We’ll see.”

Hi!

I think what you need to take into consideration when comparing fans from abroad to ones here in the states is culture. Our culture is different and what we may find more appealing in an outspoken player, French folk may find off putting.

Personally, I don't find Gobert arrogant but he does play with a chip on his shoulder.

Just a thought.
