Zach Lowe: Paul George would love to play with Gordon Hayward

Trading away a ton of assets for one year of Paul George is the type of short-sighted thinking that landed the Brooklyn Nets in the mess they're currently in.

Pretty terrible comparison... they gave away multiple unprotected picks for guys way past their prime... many teams have benefitted from trading future assets for win now pieces. GSW being one of them... Cleveland another.

You know you dont jump blind into these things right? You can request permission to talk with the player and his agent to see if they would have any interest under any scenario to sign long-term with the team. If he flat out says no to Utah, then you dont trade for him.

If he says "Yeah, I would sign in Utah if we proved we can compete with GSW" then yeah, you try and get a trade done. I doubt PG is giving that kind of assurance to anyone though, even one as vague as that.

He said two weeks ago he's a pacer and not going anywhere... unless he absolutely did not want to be here for a year he'd give us the assurance if we were a championship team he'd stay. It's just words. Not guaranteeing anything.

In neither of those cases were those one-year rentals. Talk about a terrible comparison.

Cool, ignore the other points.

I ignored your other points because they were irrelevant. Us having more assets after a hypothetical trade than what Brooklyn had is irrelevant; it's short-sighted thinking that will screw us for every year after 2018. All for a one-year window against possibly the greatest team of all time.

Love hadn't signed... Iggy didn't clearly put that team over the top. We are talking about late first rounders and favs or Hood... guys that can't stay healthy. Cleveland traded two firsts to rent mozgov... this is nowhere near the same amount of risk as trading five unprotected 1sts which BKN did over 2-3 years.

How does 2018 and beyond look when Hayward leaves?

Words to the public are different than agents speaking candidly. He said he was a Pacer because he was at a charity event in Indy.

Love gave Cleveland his reassurance that he would resign. Iggy made it obvious he wanted to go to Golden State before they acquired him. This isn't remotely comparable to unloading a bunch of assets for a guy who has made it very obvious he's LA-bound after next year.

All this trade would do is maybe get us to the WCF next year, and then next offseason we'd be the same team as we are right now minus Hood, Favors, and two future firsts. We're worse off in a year, and have no championship. The point of bringing up the Nets was never to say that the two trades were exactly the same, it was just to point out the stupidity in going all in for a one-year window.

He's linked with LAL obviously but stars like PG are rare. IMO he's the 2nd best player in the EC. GH-Gobert-PG is a championship caliber team.

You have a crystal ball?

Then PG13 has 2 years on his contract, because you don't have a crystal ball and his second year is the same as Love's third year - player option.

The point is you have control for just 1 year more. You can still choose 2 years of Love instead of 1 year of PG13, but come on... lets have at least some honesty here.

PG just said he plans on opting out to join Lakers...

Not really, he just said he's not coming back to Indiana. Also, if Love has any sort of market approaching his contract value in the third year, will opt out too. It doesn't make sense for him not to opt out, unless he can't get anywhere close to that amount on the open market. And if he can't get anywhere close to that amount and you have to pay it to him, then he's not a good contract at that point.

So to break it down Love either:
1. will deserve a contract of similar value and will opt out in order to ensure long-term secure contract
or
2. will not deserve anywhere close to his money due in the 3d year and will pick his option making you pay him an albatross of a contract in his 3d year.

Noone is gonna give PG half of his real worth. I mean Cavs is the biggest shot here. They would want to make their move to compete with GSW. No other teams would be willing to deal for him just for a year.

Hopefully the Lakers just step in and trade for him now that he's officially made his intentions known. I'd rather see him moved anywhere but Cleveland, GS or SA. ****. And I don't understand why the Pacers would want Love. Are they aiming for 35 to 40 wins every year? That's just dumb.
