What's new

The Jazz have acquired the 13th pick and select Donovan Mitchell

I'm watching his videos and it seems like he's a more athletic version of George Hill to me, obviously a worse shooter though. Is that a terrible comparison?

Offensively he seems more dynamic than George Hill to me. George Hill to me is pass first. DM seems to look for his own shot a lot more. Which to me is great because we already have so many passers on our team (provided GH comes back).

Not a bad comp. I was thinking maybe Shumpert or Tony Allen. So, I guess I'm projecting him a bit lower than you.

I haven't seen anywhere that he is a lockdown defender. If he is despite his size then it's great.
I am not trying to **** on him at all. I was high on Trey Burke before we dumped 14 and 21 picks for him and don't want to get burnt again so when I see "questionable shot selection" in the scouting report I am genuinely unimpressed.

If all you do is read scouting reports, every single player in the draft has weaknesses.

Go watch his strengths video and the interview video. Then make up your own mind instead of reading someone else's.

I personally consider Hill to be more of a combo guard than a pass-first point guard. He's probably a better passer than Donovan, but when I saw his wingspan, the first thing I thought of was George Hill.

I don't want to compare the kid to Kawhi Leonard, but he's being drafted in a very similar circumstance. DL sees a late-lottery prospect who he loves and trades up to get. The prospect is an elite-level defender and elite athlete with amazing combine numbers. He's also got a questionable jump shot, and doesn't necessarily have a defined position at the next level. He's also a great kid who is very likable. While I don't think he'll develop into a Top-5 player like Leonard has, hopefully he can at least become a high-level starter.

Good pick for the Jazz. Seems to be a high-character player which fits the Utah mold. Range is a concern. Hill is probably a good comp. GH struggled his 1st year (40%/33%) and then became a very good shooter from his 2nd year on. Can Mitchell do the same?

Any chance Hill returns or did the Jazz draft 2 PG's because they know he probably won't?

I think Hill is a fair comparison although an uber-athletic version. This kid is going to make some highlight reels that Hill could only dream of. In that respect I think that the Kawhi Leonard comparison is a good one although I'd say he's a much better shooter coming out than Leonard was. I've heard he made one of the biggest jumps from his freshman to sophomore season and he'd only recently committed to basketball over baseball. So it's hard to set a ceiling on this guy.

Woke up this good news.

Mitchell has that edge we need more of. Plus he wants to be here, and WE GOT RID OF SOFTIE NO DEFENSE NO REBOUNDING LYLES!

So we basically got tougher, and more explosive. I like it.

I think he is a good defender and underrated offensive player. He is just 3pt shooting consistency away from being an all star caliber player. I see him as a downsized Kawhi. Or poor mans Wade. And i wont be surprsied if he turns out to be the top 5 players of the draft in long run.

Ended up working most of the day so didn't get a chance to find out what happened.. So I've been watching Donovan Mitchell interviews, and I'm impressed that he answers interview questions intelligently and with precision. This bodes well in that he might also be able to think quickly on his feet, which might translate to other things like learning the system and on the fly decision making on court.. (fingers crossed)

His 3pt% went from 25% his freshman year to 35% sophomore year and 40% in the post-season. He's got some beef on his body and a big booty. He is going to be the most athletic player on the Jazz since...who? That one handed alley-oop catch and jam was massively impressive. Plays strong defense, with his freaky wingspan throwing defenders off when they gauge just of his 6'3 height not his 6'10 span. This is a guy who will affect the game even when his shot isn't falling, unlike Trey.

NOOO w egave up to early on lyles!

I do think Lyles can still be a good NBA player. In his rookie season he showed potential. I don't think that was a fluke. But it's like DL said, to get something you have to give something. I think the Jazz coaching staff and management determined that Lyles just wasn't right for US. If he blows up for Denver so be it. We got a great prospect that may fit us better with Mitchell back in return.
