Boston is in competition with the 29 other teams, why give something to another team to help them?

I think most GM's would do it to create goodwill, but Ainge obviously gives no ****s. He holds the chips and he is playing bully ball.

Spitefulness/pointlessly cutthroat in the big picture is a terrible way to operate. Maybe Ainge was onto something when he said that he thinks that teams ask from more from the Celtics because they have more, but maybe it has to do more with that they don't like him and how he does business on top of it all.

Let me break this down for you.

The TPE would help us, not Boston. Correct? So it's valuable, but only to us.

Let's say you and I are in a competitive business together. I have something that's worthless to me. It could be somewhat valuable to you though. Am I just going to give it to you? Hell no! I'm competing with you. If I get no benefit from this, then it ain't happening.

Do you understand?

Horrible example. The jazz only very indirectly compete with Boston. And if they sign someone using the TPE, it's a loss for a team that ALSO competes with Boston. It's not a player that magically appears out of nowhere.

This is a fair point, although I could point out a number of times when a team's star player left in his prime and it was done in a way that didn't completely **** over the former team. Utah invested a lot on Hayward and his development and it's hard to lose all of that for nothing.

It does point out the need I think for compensatory picks or something along those lines in the NBA. It's little things like this that really make it hard on small market teams.

If it has value to the counterparty, it does not matter if it has value to you. It is still an asset and you can expect to get paid for it.

Why would someone help a competitor unless there is something in it for you? I guess you could argue goodwill, which a team might reciprocate in the future.

If the Jazz using the TPE to get a player, and then this player helps the Jazz beat the Celtics.

So for all the reasons there are to hate Ainge, this is certainly not one of them.

Sure, they could've done a deal before. Would've been nice for us if they had.

We weren't the only game in town. Boston found a better deal for them. So now they're bad sports because they did what's best for them rather than feeling sorry for us? If the situation was reversed, and DL didn't take the best deal possible bc he felt bad for the other team, I'd be pissed at him, so would you, and rightfully so. This isn't a charity league, it is in all forms, a competitive business.

Maybe, but they were going to lose Bradley next year. They got Morris, who is a solid player (even though I dont love him), who is on a cheap 2 year contract and he fits what they are trying to build ( a team full of 6'8 guys who can handle/score). They also probably think he can be a lot better outside of Detroit's terrible offense and in an elite offense, which is probably true. Utah couldn't give them a player, and they obviously wanted to keep depth and not just give away a player while getting nothing back.
