The geopolitical landscape has changed quite a bit since five years ago hasn't it? China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, The Phillipines, Turkey, Egypt, USA, etc.

From the AP news...

"Duterte has strenuously defended the violence and boasted of participating himself.

Late last year, he bragged that he personally pulled the trigger and killed three people years ago while serving as mayor of Davao City. And last week, while in Vietnam for an international summit, he said he took his first life years earlier.

"When I was a teenager, I had been in and out of jail, rumble here and there," Duterte said during a speech in Danang, where he briefly crossed paths with Trump on the sidelines of an international summit. "At the age of 16, I already killed someone."

He claimed he fatally stabbed the person "just over a look." His spokesman later tried to downplay the comment, saying, "I think it was in jest."

Trump has shown little interest in pressuring Duterte to rein in the violence, instead saluting him during a May phone call.

"I just wanted to congratulate you because I am hearing of the unbelievable job on the drug problem," Trump told Duterte, according to a transcript of the conversation that later leaked. "Many countries have the problem, we have a problem, but what a great job you are doing and I just wanted to call and tell you that."

Xi Jinping

"Since assuming power, Xi has introduced far-ranging measures to enforce party discipline and to ensure internal unity. His signature anti-corruption campaign led to the downfall of prominent incumbent and retired officials.[8] Xi has tightened restrictions over civil society and ideological discourse, advocating internet censorship in China as the concept of "internet sovereignty".[9][10] Xi has called for further market economic reforms, for governing according to the law and for strengthening legal institutions, with an emphasis on individual and national aspirations under the slogan "Chinese Dream".[11] Xi has also championed a more assertive foreign policy, particularly with regard to China–Japan relations, China's claims in the South China Sea, and its role as a leading advocate of free trade and globalization. The credo of his foreign policy is 中國特色大國外交 (Zhongguo tese de daguo waijiao, or "great-power diplomacy with Chinese characteristics").[12] He has also sought to expand China's Eurasian influence through the One Belt One Road Initiative.[8]

Considered the central figure of the People's Republic's fifth generation of leadership,[13] Xi has significantly centralized institutional power by taking on a wide range of leadership positions, including chairing the newly formed National Security Commission, as well as new steering committees on economic and social reforms, military reform, and the Internet. “Xi Jinping has been nicknamed ‘the Chairman of Everything’. Of the eight best-known and most influential leading groups, he is chair of four[;] […] these four are also the most wide-ranging in jurisdiction."[14] Xi’s political thoughts have been added to the constitution as Xi Jinping Thought,[15] and published as a free mobile app.[16][17] Xi has had a cult of personality constructed around himself[18][19] "with books, cartoons, pop songs and even dance routines".[20] In 2014 Xi was top in a poll for "The World’s Most Popular Leader".[21][22]"

He has been named as "The World’s Most Powerful Man", "China's strongest leader since Chairman Mao Zedong",[23][24][25][26][27] and the "new strongman".[28][29]

LOL

obama was more of a dictator than trump!

so much executive orders

hjahahahahaha

hahahaha

only a retard would think trump is a dictator!

Very good thread idea. I too believe and observe the neo-dictatorship that keeps rising in every corner of the world. There certainly is a pattern that is not coincidental and might lead to very bad experiences, which as a whole is worth keep debating over.

I'd remove the USA from that list. Not a single thing has been done to make him a dictator. Guy is a blowhard, has some terribly horrible ideas, has no tact and is generally bad. But how do you figure a dictator? He has not tried to change term limits, dismiss congress or anything. The most I can see is his constant aggression to the press. Genuinely curious on this one...

But nice thread. Certainly seeing a rise in these types of leaders and it makes the world more likely to see regional or world wide war. Just look to Saudi Arabia and Egypt v Iran.

We should definitely define the concept of dictator moving forward.

I think a dictator is the leader that;

does not let opposition live.
Gathers all power in his hand (has there ever been a female dictator?)
Sees democratic rights as a danger to his stream of political influence and oppresses them
Tries to set an example of fear in hearts of own people so they’ll think twice before stepping one step away from the comfort of their little lives for opposing

Good try. Of course no dictators could really beat the ideological Marxists of the twentieth century.... Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot.....

The crop of dictators we have on hand is something else, ideologically. They want to build infrastructure like the road (high-speed railway) across the route of the ancient Silk Road of Marco Polo. China and Russia are led no longer by ideological Marxists who will kill millions for the communist cause.

We need folks like Hillary preaching about deplorable humans who need to be locked up for not believing in AGW or for worrying about bringing in Muslim Brotherhood terrorists to take a slice outta the American Pie demographic of voters who won't support re-education camps.

We need Obama fill the Civil Service with ideological Marxists who will work their damnest to overthrow American election results.

We need George Bush IV and V (or, well, McCain and Romney and other RINOs) to keep the right flank of Rockefeller's (or, well, Am-Brit world hegemony and our current "Opium War" on track.

When I was in the Philippines years ago, the Huks used to pick me up and feed me supper just to be able to tell me how McArthur set up the Tagalog (Manila elites) control of the country. On the other side, one of Marcos' folks told me how he went to the Batanes Islands (between Taiwan and the Philippines) to personally accept plane loads of US currency----stolen from the US Treasury's pile of greenbacks that were too dog-eared to circulate in the US--- courtesy of the Rockefellers. Ferdinand Marcos had been charges with murder, actually, but was released on political influence.

I met Benigno Aquino in 1971 when he was visiting his father. He had to flee the country during Martial Law, and lived in Massachusetts with the Kennedys until he tried to go home publicly to run an opposition campaign against Marcos. Marcos' henchmen gunned him down on the tarmac at Manila International Airport. One of the men who helped with that chore escaped the Philippines and lived for years in Texas, and was a "always invited" guest at Bush Jr's ranch during the eighties and early nineties.

So far as I'm concerned, it is indeed an act of war to kill drug dealers in a world where the Opium War of the 1840s is still going on..... an act of war against the Bush dynasty, the Rockefeller bankers who launder the drug trade..... because arresting their dealers and putting them in front of corrupt dynasty judges does not get them off the street. Hell, even our American Tories all had their snuff boxes so they could put a little joy up their noses in the 1770s. It is was Bush family business to supply them.

I heard this bit on the radio, just sayin'...... "How many people do you know who have been murdered?" the respondent hemmed, hawed, 'uhmmmm.... I dunno.... maybe nobody. I can't think of anyone I actually knew who was murdered....." Well, Hillary and Bill were "closely associated" with about forty people who got murdered somehow..... clear back in their Arkansas days, the Clintons were on the take for helping make Arkansas the drop site for planeloads of opioids. And you wonder why we're having an epidemic today, after eight years of Obama....

It really doesn't happen that much, and unless you're dealing drugs or a gang banger, it's stats say not more than one or two.

Just sayin'......

Since Bush sent our troops into Afghanistan, the poppies have been bloomin' everywhere once again, just like they did in Viet Nam in the sixties and seventies. How come nobody in Russia or China will grow them for us?

Speaking of drugs... what are you on?

C'mon Stoked. This proves he's a dictator:

Is this seriously trying to make the case that Trump is a dictator? If so it shows a deep lack of understanding of what a dictator actually is and does.

I dont think he is a dictator. The only thing he does that is similar is his attack on free press. But that is only one thing. I think its fortunate that we have a system that prevents someone from becoming a dictator in the US and I have 0 concern that Trump will become anything close to that. He will just be a really ****ty president.

I can see where the current admin uses some boogeyman rhetoric so he does employ fear. But his opposition is fighting tooth and nail, he has not consolidated powers.

No, it's not. But can you argue he wouldn't jump at the chance? Anyways, he gets to play one on the world's stage.

I doubt any president would balk at the chance to serve multiple terms and have ultimate power. The real question is one of "evilness" for lack of a better term. Does the Donald have the capacity to violate human rights to maintain power as a true dictator does? I don't know. That is a big leap. It is like the leap between threatening to kill someone and actually pulling the trigger. It is not an easy line to cross.

Xi Jinping is the one that is concerning, I didn't realize the scope of the transformation taking place under his increasingly unchecked power.

"Xinhua’s description of democracy’s self-destructive tendencies echoes that of a book published in 1991 called “America Against America” by a professor at Fudan University, Wang Huning. But there are three important differences between China’s interaction with America today and the way it was then. One is that Wang has just been elevated to the party’s most powerful body, the Politburo Standing Committee, where he is likely to be in charge of propaganda (that is, projecting the party’s image at home and the country’s abroad). Having in such a position an America-sceptic who actually studied there is unprecedented.

Next, the government has started to export what it calls “the China model”. Deng Xiaoping once said China was not a model for anyone. At last month’s party gathering, Xi talked about China “blazing a new trail for other developing countries” and offering “Chinese wisdom and a Chinese approach to solving problems” (his “Belt and Road Initiative” offers lots of cash, too). Orville Schell of the Asia Society in New York says this seems to set up a clash not just of civilisations and values, but of political and economic systems.

Third, the anti-US strain now seems to run from the top of the Chinese state (Xi and Wang) to the bottom (Xinhua and internet trolls). That suggests such sentiment is gaining strength. Xi may still prefer to exercise caution in his country’s rivalry with America. But he does not seem to have moderated his global ambitions because of Trump. And it will take more than a dinner in the Forbidden City to wish those ambitions away."

Agreed. I completely ignore the dictatorship talk at this point. Just like I did when it was brought up under President Obama. Until concrete actions are taken to close the press, dismiss congress, end term limits on the presidency and the like its all a bunch of malarkey. The level of idiocy is irrelevant.

Any real attempt by either party to install a dictator would result in widespread violence and possibly civil war. Won't happen because both sides are so vigilant on watching every move the other side makes.

Saudi Arabia didn't just become a dictatorship. Neither did Egypt. Or Russia. Or China. All of those have been dictatorships for decades. And the US didn't become a dictatorship because you don't like who got elected.

What a dumpster fire of a thread.
