Central tank command : the official thread

No, please stop. If the season ended today, would Mitchell be 2nd team all-nba? If no, then he isnt even equal to Gobert.

Not even debatable? Please. If they were on different teams and contracts were not an issue, you would not want to trade Gobert for Mitchell? I know I would. And that takes nothing away from Gobert's impact and greatness, but Mitchell dictates what he wants to do with the ball. Gobert can' do that. Simply put, Mitchell plays better basketball.

Sure he may not be the most consistent player, but im guessing his averages for the month put him on top. I love Joe Ingles and his game, but he's not driving by Joel Embiid to the rack. That takes such big balls as a month old, 6'3" rookie it's not even funny. I think he has the biggest impact on the club now and may in the future, consistently challenge a dialed in Rudy for that as well.

We should not be talking "averages" with Mitchell, but trends. The kid is on a very steep learning curve and he's climbing it fast! The mistakes he made during October and the first part of November are mostly corrected; that is, if we give any credibility to his last week of play.

Now all of this could be an illusion created from a small sample size, but we won't have to wait very long to find out. If we are still above .500 by the end of December, then we will know.

The disrespect for what Gobert did last year is astronomical. He was arguably a top 10 player last year.

Like last year, Jazz fans lol'd at the "but Gobert isnt elite because he cant create his own shot" narrative and now some are using it to say Mitchell>Gobert. GTFO

I really dislike discussions as to who is the best player on the team, because it always seems to diminish the contribution of every player but one.

On the other hand, we already know how great Gobert is...

...and what if he is the second best player on the team by the end of the season?

What if they watched the Bulls game where he scored 4 points on 1/10 shooting? I'm sorry, Mitchell had just had too many performances like that to call him the best or 2nd best player. That's not people saying he isnt going to be great. It's just people not getting ahead of themselves unnecessarily.

You are conflating one performance with the ob

Saying Mitchell is better than Gobert is not disrespecting Rudy just like saying Rudy is better than Don is not disrespecting Don. It doesn't matter anyways they are both awesome. But from a bench-racing standpoint I have thought Donovan was the best player on our team for over a month and now I'm convinced he's not only probably the best on our team but could possibly become the best in the NBA at some point.

Well it took you one game (last night's) to agree that Mitchell is better than Joe. This followed your reasoning that Joe was better because of Mitchell lack of consistency. Where did that reasoning go after just one more game?

Look, I get it, Gobert is great and has proven his eating of souls over time, and it's not cool to bash our players, but gosh, why dismiss my opinion so abruptly considering you changed your mind on Joe and Donovan just a day after we had that discussion?

I think you're being biased. Again.

Well my reasoning was Joe was more consistent than Mitchell's variance of performance, but when the high end of your variance includes 41 points I guess I have to give that the nod. And if your recall, I had them 3 ranked as 2a, 2b, and 2c which shows how close I had them.

I don't think it's bias, I think it's just having long-term memory and respecting years of work.
And look taking the ranking of Ingles, Favors, and Hood is one thing. Those are 3 non All-Stars who are role players (besides Favors who is a really good player in a primary roll man role). Taking the place of Rudy Gobert who is a DPOY runner-up, 2nd team All-NBA center, and someone who basically makes the Jazz defense top 3 overall when without him they are just average is an entirely different thing and not something I'm just going to concede to a rookie.

How about looking at the month of November? (I realize that it' a small sample size, but if we are to rank mitchell, there is only a small sample size.) I'm sure here are nuances to the game in which Ingles excels at that the average fan and myself included, don't pick up on where he excels over Donovan, but I still think Donovan jumps off the screen to an unbiased average fan as the best player on the team. And with the trend where Rudy was going, that includes he as well.
Let's see what he does in December. Was November a hot streak month, can he duplicate November in December, will he be better even.
