Locker Clean-out Discussion

He says "you know" a lot, you know.

Hard not to love this team more and more every time you hear them talk.... at least I don't think it's just me that happens to. I shouldn't be but keep being surprised that I enjoy this team more and more and Mitchell, man he's just the man.

Every dude, even AB, seemed positive and upbeat. Not sure we've ever had a squad where that was the case for everyone.

That makes what Exum did in the playoffs even more impressive that he played through an injury.

I would be shocked if he wasnt here next year. I have no idea on the price though.

Here is the Ricky conundrum... he has a cap hold of 22M in 2019 when we need to use space. If we extend Dante and have that caphold then it will be tough to have the requisite space we want to chase decent FA. Add favs to that and it only gets more convoluted.

We could extend Ricky this offseason at say 15M and get more space...

We could keep Dante and chance it that we could move him if we needed to clear space. Could also move Crowder to help with some room.

Let’s say we extend Ricky... does Dante want to stick around as a backup? I know many of you don’t care for him but he showed some great signs.

Do we roll with Ricky? Waive his caphold and hope we can fit him and a FA into our room... not like the pg market will get crazy for him.

There is an interesting dance there if you are of the belief that we want space in 2019.
What exactly is a cap hold and how does it work?

I doubt he has much of a market. He'll be here.
I am sure another team will make an offer. There are enough teams desperate for young talent that someone will pursue him. But I have no idea what the price is.

The only reason another team wont make an offer is if the league is well aware that whatever the offer is will be matched. Kind of like what happened to Mirotic last off season.

6-8 mill per at most is what I would expect. Lou Williams re-signed for 7 mill a year with the Clippers a few months ago. So that kind of showed what the market might look like this summer. There isn't a lot of cap space available around the league.

If you want to retain him that amount stays on your cap sheet preventing you from signing a guy then giving that FA whatever he wants. You can waive the cap hold and it is gone but you will then need to have the cap space needed to sign the FA you want and retain your guy.

Once you sign the guy the caphold goes away... so if we ordered it right it might be workable... depends on Dante and Favs too.

Except Lou is old and young RFAs almost always get overpaid because of potential... I think 8 will be the max per year for Dante somewhere around the full MLE. There may be a cap space team that goes as high as 10, but most the teams that have space don’t have a clear need.

Obviously not every offer would be matched. Jazz would not match 20 per. lol

But ya, he won't get any substantial offers that the Jazz would hesitate to match. Under 10m for sure.

Another thing to remember is a cap hold for a player has absolutely nothing to do with a qualifying offer.

Also, even if a team has zero players signed, there are still cap holds for a minimum number of roster spots, including a team's first round picks. I believe cap holds would include 13 roster spots, but a caplogist would neec to verify.

Cap holds apply to all FA's a team has until that player is renounced or signed by another team. So Utah's cap holds will include Exum and Favors and Neto.

In 2019 assuming Dante gets $8M a year and Favs is gone we will have around $20M in cap space with Ricky's cap hold (and our other cap holds). That is enough to have a conversation with a FA and agree to terms and figure out Ricky on the backend... so you sign Ricky to 14-15M first freeing up another 6-7M... the difference between actual salary and cap hold. We could move Jae for no salary or maybe Exum to free up the 35M required for a 30% max FA.

So here is what I'd do with Exum. Offer him 3 years for 25M with the final year only $1M guaranteed. This allows us another year to view his development to see what he will become, but also gives us some value upside if he stays healthy and develops. If he suffers an terrible injury again having the additional unguaranteed year (not a team option... unguaranteed) means you could stretch the remaining 8-9M next year over 5 years (instead of 3) and maintain cap flexibility. Sucks to pay the guy $17M for essentially one year, but it is a bet with some upside and sometimes bets go wrong.

Favors w/ Jake Scott and PK

Favs: We proved a lot of people wrong this season. We didn't get as far as we wanted, so we got a lot to work on and improve it for next year.

You've been vocal about wanting to stay. Not everyone does that. Why?

DF: They've been supportive of me thru my career. Times when they could trade me, bench me, and they didn't. I appreciate this organization.

Feelings as season ends

DF: It's kinda like the last day of school. You know it's coming but you gotta say goodbye to all your friends and stuff. It's how the NBA is. Team might not look the same next year, you never know, we might have some different people next year. Just have to get ready for that. This has been one of my favorite years. I been through it all. Lotto team, bad team, playoff team. This year was great. Unselfish team. Great chemistry. Great year, proved everybody wrong. Best year I've had in the NBA.

How do you address free agency planning?

No idea. Mindset right now is enjoy break, spend time with kids and family, focus on enjoying it. No apprehension or nervousness yet. Maybe I'll get butterflies when the time comes, but just enjoying it right now.

As you look back on time in Utah can you see how you've grown?

A lot. I was 19, I was dealing with a different situation when I was drafted there were already trade rumors, so it was a relief to find a home here, the fans, organizations, from age 19 to 26.

You've talked of sacrifice to change your game to work alongside Rudy.

Coach and Dennis told me at the beginning of the year that it wasn't going to be a paint game for me this year because we had Rudy down there. Get comfy switching 1-4 or 1-5, might not finish games, might not hit 35 minutes, develop a 3. I was up for the challenge.

What about the stereotypes about young black players not wanting Utah?

I say give it a try. People have different things to say abut SLC but I think hey don't know much about it. I got used to it, learned to love it, love SLC. Give it a try. [How long?] About two years. Growing up in Atlanta, from south, it took some time. Then adapted, fell in love. A few years ago stayed out two summers straight to adapt. Love it.

Do you stick around Utah this summer?

In Atlanta this summer for the most part. I told DL and Q that I'll come up as needed, but spend most of my time in Atlanta this summer.
Well he's definitely saying the right stuff. Maybe we should just run it back, have great chemistry, grow together and see what happens. We could be moving the ball like the 2014 Spurs at this rate, the team loves eachother. Dangerous to break that up.

What exactly is a cap hold and how does it work?
The cap hold is a salary cap device that places a number (I think 120% of the last year of their contract) on unrestricted free agents with Bird Rights. It keeps teams from being able to squat on their free agents rights, while using cap space they don’t have to add a free agent and then extend their guy over the cap.

Back in 2013, the cap holds on Carroll, Millsap, Williams and Jefferson would’ve put the Jazz well over the salary cap. They had to renounce those holds (and the player’s Bird Rights in the process) in order to facilitate the cap dump with the Warriors. It forces teams to either prioritize keeping their guys and using Bird Rights to go above the cap, or give up theirs Bird Rights to gain cap space to pursue free agents.
