Which is why he probably goes elsewhere this summer. He can be a starter, and I can't believe I'm saying this, maybe even a borderline All Star in the East. If he went to Atlanta and averaged 15-11 and got his team to playoff discussions near the All Star break, he could maybe make it in that terrible Eastern Conference.

This really doesn’t get talked about enough. One huge reason this team struggled when it did when Gobert did was a lack of depth. Favors was a great backup, but HE had no backup. I have no idea why Udoh didn’t get more minutes in general. This, and backup for Rubio, must be addressed.

Collins and Prince are solid players Atlanta will not look to trade. If I'm Atlanta, I try to build something that makes sense around Collins, Prince, and their top 5 pick. More than likely, they are in the high lottery again next year. Favors just makes sense there without mortgaging the future.

If Atlanta trades Schroder and drafts somebody like Doncic or Trae Young, I could see Favors fitting there. They aren't that far from Eastern Conference relevance. And if you have two solid young pieces like Prince and Collins AND a high draft pick, why wouldn't you put a good lockerroom, affordable vet like Favors with them? He just helped in grooming Mitchell.

Agreed. If we lose Favors, we need a starting 4 AND backup 5. Bradley and Udoh don't inspire confidence and we'd have to hope like hell Crowder gets much more consistent - which I think he will, but that's besides the point. Even if he can't knock a three, Derrick still a luxury most teams would kill for. We'd miss his presence badly.

We were dynamite the second half of the season and only fell to Houston because we had no reliable backup for Ricky. At this point, I'd rather bring back Favors and Exum if we don't kill ourselves doing it, grab a cheap stretch 4 we can groom or to push Jae, and grab a reliable backup PG in case Exum decides to suck or gets injured again. I'd also rather keep Royce out of any trades if possible. He's got killer value for his contract.

Regardless of which metric you use, Favors would appear to be a top-20 defender in the league. He was also top-10 in the league this year in offensive rebounding. He played under 30 minutes a game, too.

I'm really worried about what our defense might look like if we let him go.

I don’t think they want to win next season. They want 2-3 more high picks to get some young talent that could maybe develop into something. This year they get four picks, one of them a no. 3. I think they might try to consolidate two of them to move into mid-10s. That’s still not enough to build any kind of future team, the only young player they have that might amount to something currently is John Collins. They’ll be looking to add top tier talent through 2019 and maybe 2020 drafts. You don’t sign an expensive center who wants to play and win now and has been on a playoffs team for two consecutive seasons and then try to lose enough games to get a high pick.

I think Sacramento are a team that might offer Favors a great deal. They don’t own their pick next year anyway and are stacked with young talent as it is (Hield, Fox, Bogdanovic, Giles, now probably Doncic too) and won’t want to tank anymore. He could bring experience and stability. I think they will prefer to take on some bad deals and get more picks or try to price away Gordon or Parker though.

Dallas may also be a candidate for signing Derrick. Ayton, Bagley and Bamba will probably be gone by the time they pick. They have no 5's to speak of on their roster. If Favors is willing to play the 5, Dallas might be a good spot.

Joe likely stays in Australia, but it would be so like Ingles to knock on Derrick's door at 12:01 a.m.

I guess the selling point for the Jazz is we're one of the few teams that would let Favors start at PF. I know he's said a few times he isn't a center and doesn't like playing there.

Locke really dug into the defensive statistics with Gobert and Favors on his podcast last week and basically what he found is that our defense the past couple of seasons has been just as good and maybe even slightly better with a stretch 4 such as Crowder, Jerebko, Sefelosha, etc. playing alongside Gobert than it was with Favors and Gobert playing together. Locke doesn't seem to think losing Favors will hurt our defense, and his numbers seemingly back that up.

I haven't looked into it myself, but according to Locke, our defensive rating was just as good with Jerebko, Sefelosha, and I believe even Ingles at the 4 next to Gobert as it was with Favors at the 4 next to Gobert. The only player that really killed our defensive rating when playing the 4 was Joe Johnson.
