What's new

Jazz select Grayson Allen at 21

What are you even talking about? A swing for the fence guy can be dead money just as much as a playoff starter (the former more likely when you're picking late).

"Safe" picks aren't always fun or project as franchise-altering but they have legitimate value.

A player who can provide gravity and scoring in a bench role immediately (important because helps DURING rookie deal) has value.

I can't believe I'm defending Allen, I'm conflicted and yes there are concerns. But I think there's some serious overreaction. I mean we were picking at #21....
I would like a "safe" pick that fills any kind of need. I don't think that's at all unreasonable.

Y’all finally comin’ ‘round.

As stated 4,000x in Niko thread, when the illustrious mystery of the pick converts to the reality of who that player becomes, we then will value that player much less than the initial pick that landed them.
I think it shows more about what people think of the pick than what we thought of the trade at the time and now.

So what you’re saying is a little bit of foresight goes a long way?

Damn, so the Suns got Ayton, Bridges and Okobo. What a draft for them!

He got better? He knows how to play in a team setting with less touches? You belong on an amateur board - you can't think beyond box score stats.
I'm one of the loudest proponents of defense and defensive players on the board, but you're right, I only care about the box score (defense is hard to measure in the box score if that needed any clarification).

I don't see how he'll ever play more than 20 MPG here or any contender for that matter. He's known as a poor defender, he's not a PG, he's not a switchable defender. He's a hustler that will hopefully make the right plays most of the time, mostly against bench players.
You’re probable scenario sounds pretty good tbh. It’s the 21st pick, not a top 10. Anyone who can contribute in that range is good. Our bench could use some oomph.

Doesn't fit my narrative.

He hasn't substantially improved in 3 years. He hasn't become substantially more efficient. He's still a poor defender.

Fixed it for you.

Every prospect has flaws especially at this point. I'd love a better defending version of Allen but we also wouldn't have been able to pick that player.

I mean... if you have good enough foresight to predict 30-8 finish of the season... and then that we will pick a 23 year old undersized 2 guard with defensive issues and streaky shot... I liked this draft a lot. We just happened to draft a player I had ranked a full round later than where we got him.

That's the kick in the pants. I thought the draft was pretty flat (I liked where we were sitting) for about 30 slots and we ended up reaching on a coked up jock.

Interesting about him not being a pg. when I put “Grayson Allen highlights” into the you tube search iirc the second video that came up was titled “Grayson Allen the most explosive point guard in the country”
Almost 5 assists per game ain’t bad in college imo.

Another thing I noticed in his highlight videos is that his team was almost always ranked #1 in the country (it shows the ranking on the game score). He also played for a decent college coach.

If he has the accumen to replace Ricky Rubio, I'll be happy to eat crow about it.

I just don't see that happening, and I don't love Rubio either.

I like that he didn’t miss any games last year and played 36 minutes per game too.

Reading this thread is hilarious. After all the mistakes that have been made by people on this board about the draft in the past and how most everyone will agree that the draft is pretty much a crap shoot that people act like a bunch of whining bitches thinking they know more than the Jazz staff. I'm not a close follower of college ball but Jay Bilas did say tonight that Allen is the best shooter, or maybe it was one of the best shooters, in the draft, something the Jazz need. We need to give the kid a chance. Time will tell.
