Former marine with PTSD. In any country with proper gun laws people like that would not have legal access to any gun. And yet in USA:

Mental health officials were called to his home this year
Ventura county sheriff Geoff Dean said sheriff’s deputies were called to Long’s home in Newbury Park, five miles west of Thousand Oaks, in April 2018. They found Long “somewhat irate, acting a little irrationally”, Dean said. The deputies called in mental health specialists. The specialists decided Long’s mental state did not require him to be detained for further assessment.

Long was a former marine
Dean said Long was a veteran of the US marine corps. The 28-year-old was on active duty with the marines from August 2008 to March 2013, CNN reported, citing the Department of Defense. The marine corps told news organizations that Long served in Afghanistan between November 2010 and June 2011. He was a machine gunner.

The gun was legally purchased
Authorities said the .45 caliber Glock handgun used in the shooting was legally purchased. But Dean said Long had used an extended magazine – illegal in California – during the shooting, which would enable the weapon to fire more rounds before needing to be reloaded.
 
Yeah when you have an intent to kill and the means to do so easily, even sheriff arriving on the scene was not enough. Does this put a question mark over the notion that a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun? Maybe you can eventually but how many would need to die before the bad guy with a gun is stopped?

The sheriff was due to retire soon too. So sad.

What would have stopped this incident today? Everyone going to that bar bringing their own guns to defend themselves?

Do you need to bring a gun to McDonald's as well now to protect yourself just in case?

The Borderline Bar & Grill is about 2 miles from my daughter's place in T.O.. She used to go there quite a bit... when we heard of this tragedy, we were afraid she was there. We soon got a text from her saying she was safe. Most terrifying moments I could imagine. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of everyone involved. But that can't be enough. This type of mass murder must not be allowed to continue to be the price we pay for gun ownership rights.
