2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

I wouldn't. The largest benefit of having Love would be what you'd get over the next 2.5 years. After that you get significantly diminished returns. I would not trade for him at all at that point.

And the huge downside is you lock in the team because after these two FAs, Don gets his max extension and no more cap space.

And that's my point that I wouldn't acquire Love at all.

I have major reservations about Love's contract, but there is one thing that must be pointed out. The salary cap spikes $7 million this summer and another $9 million for the 2020-21 season. The luxury tax is going up to $134 for next season and a ridiculous $143 for 2020-21. So in many ways, Love's $30 million deal starting the 2020-21 season isn't that much different than Favors' $17 million deal signed last summer.

With regards to Love, I ask two main questions:

#1 - Is he our missing piece? If yes or even maybe, we have to consider it.

#2 - If the answer to #1 is yes, will our ownership pay to keep and even build around a roster that includes his contract?

[ ] Mitchell has reached his prime.
[ ] Gobert has reached his prime.

Both are no. In the meantime GSW has 5 all-stars. Our current squad gives them trouble but it's not realistic to expect to eliminate them on a 7 game series.
This Utah team needs offensive talent asap but they need to be meticulous and patient about their next move.
In the meantime there's no harm in being alert and proactive to make a deal with a poorly managed team from East.

Woj mentioned some teams from Western Conference are looking to acquire Otto Porter. Windhorst then said these are SAC and UTA.
OPJ looks overpaid but I can see why Utah has been interested in him since a while. Spuresque high IQ player that should flourish when given a bigger role and fit well alongside DM and Rudy. Can he be that guy? That's the golden question.

It's much different as Favors is a 1+1 team-controlled which a large reason he got $17 million per. Like he probably would have taken less per year for a longer deal. Love's deal is what $30+ million per for the next FOUR years (not even counting this year)? This is the most important time to be smart with the cap (Don rookie deal).

Aside from contract, no I don't think he's the missing piece for glaring reasons like health and defensive liabilities. As we have seen the past few years, the NBA elite teams force you to switch which essentially makes your defense as good as your worst defender in the half court. Love could very well get played off the court in playoff series, especially aging Love.

I was just talking about the financial impact on the roster for the life of the contract. Favors at $17+ next year isn't that much different than Love at $28. Now of course after that, Love still has 3 years and $90 million.

I agree with you about fit. Much of my discussion here is being devil's advocate. I can see why DL might trade for Love but I could also see the reasons why he shouldn't.

Great post. I just can't wrap my head around OP Jr being worth the risk of giving up the opportunity to land FAs. I realize the reluctance to put our eggs in that basket considering our market and history, but the OPJr deal taking you out of 2019 FA for sure and makes 2020 really tough to generate a max-level spot.

I know y'all think I'm crazy, but I really think we should be going after Justise Winslow. Even if we have to send a couple picks and take back somebody like Olynyk and even find other ways to clear off some salary for them, I think it's worth it. Miami is a financial mess and they are a very average team. Dragic is coming back soon which means Winslow will get less touches. His value is at an all time high and the team is still pretty awful. We would have to make it worth it for Miami, but I think we can.

Olynyk is one of those contracts Miami would absolutely love to shed since they want to be players in free agency in 2020. He's not even playing right now but I think he could fit in well here. https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/...days-boston/3EaizT3jEji1g18TIKHwLL/story.html

Winslow is on a ridiculous bargain deal after this year ($13 per year). He's only 22 so he fits the long term timeline next to Donovan and Gobert. Winslow and Olynyk together make what Porter would make the next two years.

Just an idea...

Charlotte gets Waiters and Favors
Heat get Biyombo, Kaminsky, Monk and Utah 2019 1st
Utah gets Winslow and Olynyk

Why for Charlotte - they get better to build around Kemba. They might even send minor picks to Miami too since they get a SG in Waiters and a good big in Favors.

Why for Heat - they don't like losing Winslow, but dumping the 2 years left on both Waiters and Olynyk intrigues them. Monk and Kaminsky are also guys who could fit while they shoot for 2020 free agency. A 1st rounder plus the cap relief plus Monk makes it worth it.

Why for Utah - we get Winslow and a useful Olynyk.

I think I’d need at least one unprotected pick to take on the Love contract. In addition to age, injury, and contract length you have the fact that he might not have the extra gear and might be the spot up four man that sucks on defense but rebounds well... like I don’t think Minnesota Kevin Love is coming back and I think it may have been stat padding on a bad team.

He’s good but way too many red flags and a ton of risk. There is more value attached because of his name imo. Go get Carmelo for free if we need a “superstar”.
