What's new

2020 Presidential election

I teach 9th grade at-risk kids and our district shoves college down the kids’ throats. It’s pathetic. The town is 95% Hispanic, poor, and the kids are far better off learning life/character skills and developing actual trade skills. Become an electrician, mechanic, plumber, welder, etc. There’s a growing need for such jobs. I tell my kids, “The district is dumb. If you want to go to college and are prepared, do it. On average, you’ll make more money than someone who didn’t go to college. But that doesn’t mean it’s right for you or that you can’t make good money or be happy not gong to college. If you’d rather do a trade, do that. Work hard in high school so you have options and then make an informed decision that’s best for you, not these ******* administrators who just care about manipulating data.”

I'm all about the trade school route in today's environment. My son is graduating HS this year and He'll be going straight to a trade school so he can actually be a productive citizen and provide for himself. He's excited, I'm excited, win-win.

I think we seriously under-value trades in America. For a lot of people that is the best option, and frankly we really need skilled trades-people. I really like the approach they take in Germany, where there are several tracks you can take in high school that leads to a trade or to college. Neither one precludes the other, but they are very successful in setting up kids for success in either route, and it benefits society as a whole. And college is generally free. It's an effective system.

College is generally "free?" But isn't that socialism? Nothing is ever "free."

I'm fine with more people focusing on trade schools and fewer focusing on college just as long as we maintain strong regulation on licenses and certifications. There's been a push in some states to deregulate the trades because the magical free market will rid the nation of poor plumbers and electricians. Instead, this works to suppress the wages of skilled laborers.

Talk about deeply settled establishment

Yeah, remains to be seen here. Of course, I want Trump defeated. I do see Biden as being capable of standing toe to toe with Trump on a debate stage, which stage will be key in the 2020 election. I'm just looking for the candidate most capable of beating Trump.

Personally I see Trump eating Bidden alive. The nicknames and comments will be brutal. We can all remember all of Biden’s creepy and gag moments. I think several candidates on the left, like Harris and Klobuchar, that could withstand Trump far better. Personally I hope it’s Klobuchar at this point.

Just look at how Trump savaged Cruz, Rubio, Romney, Jeb Bush...

I see him giving as good as he takes. But admittedly, he's as old guard as it gets, including by age alone, and it may need to be a new generation. I can see Harris holding her own on stage.

Beto is in the race as well

The Dem race in 2020 is going to be interesting. Let’s see if they tear each other apart or compliment them all but then play up their own strengths.

Would be refreshing in the current political climate to see the later approach.

Biden declared.

There's no chance in hell I'm getting excited about a Biden nomination.

So far I like Buttigieg. Warren has actually started growing on me a little, too.

Pretty big no on Sanders and Biden.

I'm in wait and see mode on the rest of the field.

Biden seems to get under Trump's skin more then the other announced candidates. When Biden started out by criticizing Trump's Charlottesville "good people on both sides" remarks, Trump took the bait and claimed his remarks were "perfect" and that he was referring to people defending the Robert Lee statue, and not the neo-Nazis chanting "Jews will not replace us". And he said everybody knew that. Except they didn't know that at all, and he was referring to the neo-Nazis.

It's been clear for awhile now, IMO, that Biden worries Trump more then any of the other candidates. I think Trump understands that Biden can cut into Trump's working class support in the states Trump turned red in 2016.

When the International Association of Firefighters gave a full throated endorsement of Biden, Trump went into tweetstorm mode again. Justified or not, Biden worries Trump. I think Trump would prefer a candidate he can use socialism as a sledgehammer against in the general election.

Also telling is that reports indicate the DHS, when communicating with Trump himself, stays away from the topic of Russian interference in the 2020 election. That one cannot raise the issue with Trump because it affects his ego. So, he is not exactly into cybersecurity and the 2020 election, despite taking an oath to protect and defend.

"I'll never get the support of Dues Crazy union leadership, those people who rip-off their membership with ridiculously high dues, medical and other expenses while being paid a fortune. But the members love Trump," one tweet said.

"The Dues Sucking firefighters leadership will always support Democrats, even though the membership wants me," read another a few minutes later. "Some things never change!"

I care about a candidate who can BEAT Trump more than one that gets under his skin.

I don't think Biden can excite Democratic voters. I worry on the other hand that someone who does excite hard core liberals will alienate too many other potential voters.

All in all, I'm 50/50 as to POS, completely unqualified, biggest idiot to hold the office getting re-elected. I think it's a real possibility. A really disgusting possibility.

This.

Unfortunately I think it's the heavy over-reactions that will drive some of this. Supporters already feel fully justified in their choice, and many are now feeling the "I'm the one being attacked" BS he is laying down, generating almost a martyr vibe. That is extremely bad.
