He didn't ask if its racist. He asked if its ok to say. More things suck that vacuum cleaners and someone could take it as a homophobic comment.

So if you’re worried about someone construing that as a homophobic slur, maybe dont say **** to the other team? Why do we feel the need to do that anyway? Shouldn’t we be like... I don’t know... cheering on our own team?

I wouldn’t call a black Person “boy” regardless of the context because I know the history behind it and how it might be interpreted by others.

My question in all of this: How many fans are gonna get lifetime bans when a particularly sensitive player points security at an annoying fan for being "mean" (without any evidence, or any actual racism/hate)? Is this gonna be exploited during playoff games to silence the crowd? Or is that just a paranoid idea?

Sure. so your answer to the posters question about whether or not you suck is something you can say at a game is different from naos answer. Naos thinks its perfectly fine cause you are just calling the player a vacuum cleaner. You on the other hand can see offense in the phrase.

And that explains a lot. It’s pretty damn well known but obviously not here in utah. Which is why fans shouldn’t get all defensive for being labeled racists by players who know the historical significance of the insults that fans are ignorantly flinging their way.

Instead, I’ve seen a lot of fans on this board whining about being labeled as racist and are pretending that the PC crowd is squashing all speech.

So in your mind if a fan from europe who knows nothing of the word boy being offensive said the word boy at a game and was banned for life from vivint and labeled a racist then he/she shouldn't be defensive?

What if you dont fear that the word you are using is offensive but it is offensive to someone and you have no idea about it? I like your plan of dont say anything. I alluded to that course of action earlier. We agree, the best action is silence.

In 2008, my former manager -- a white, male, BYU graduate -- said he voted for Obama "because he was black." I voted against Obama, not because he was black, but because I didn't agree with his policies. So, which one of us was being racist?

I completely disagree with your premise, because racism will continue to exist until our actions are no longer based upon the color of one's skin. Acting like it doesn't is a nice place to start.

Ignoring the problem doesn't make it go away. In an ideal world everyone would treat people equally, unfortunately that doesn't happen. To answer your question who is racist?, I don't know if either of you are. Simply voting for some because of their race probable makes you racially bias but not a racist. Me cheering for John Stockton doesn't make me a racist but perhaps I unknowingly root for him because I can more easily identify with him because I am white. Don't see anything wrong with that but that isn't racism. If I think John Stockton is the best because he is white. That is racism.

You not voting for Obama doesn't make you racist but to ignore the fact that many white people voted against him because of his race is part of the problem. There were plenty of white males who simply voted against him because he was black. He was also treated differently because he was black. No president ever had his citizenship questioned, no president who just won the election had the leader of GOP stand on capital hill and say his number one goal was to make him a one term president. No president was called a liar during his state of union speech from a known Klan member. So when Trump does some of the things that the GOP criticized Obama for (executive orders) but ignore it when Trump does it. Is it just politics or a sign of racism? I could make an argument for both reasons.

As far as your comment about racism not being institutionalized, have you forgotten the 3/5 rule, slavery, Jim Crow laws, the Klan, lynchings, higher rate of imprisonment of blacks, voter id laws are based in racism. The problem is thinking there isn't collateral damage to society because of past actions of the racist government decisions. Pretending like the problem is people talking too much about racism or calling it out when the real problem is pretending the only way for it to go away is to ignore it.

The way it goes away is having discussions about how we treat people and teaching our children to be better than us. I am not optimistic because too many people love holding onto it and feel justified in acting that way. I am pretty sure it has no chance of getting better if we ignore it or pretend it doesn't exist.
