Privileged by Kyle Korver

I won't say "white privilege" doesn't exist but look at the Jussie Smollett thing. He has privilege in the city of Chicago. It's also pretty sad when someone tries to create racism because the supply doesn't meet the demand. The demand for racism is what really should upset us all.

Slavary happened in a country that stated in our own Declaration of Independence that "All Men are Created Equal". Silly but why reparations now? I'm saying this as a liberal. I just don't get that idea. I believe we can pump money into these suffering communities to help relieve years of abuse.
It started with slavery.

I'm white, primarily Anglo-Saxon. Here are a few advantages I can see that people who are similarly situated have in American society (Note that I said 'advantages' instead of 'privileges.' The latter sounds as though an invisible hand of God is literally giving me unfair, preferential treatment, or that I have a special white person membership card that gets me free drinks and travel upgrades.)

• We're speaking English here. If you grow up in a home where 'proper' and grammatically correct English is the primary language you speak, this is an advantage.

• Schools, by and large, teach a western, British (or sanitized European Jewish?) view of history. I get that they think it's their empire and all, but there are always other sides to the story that are omitted. (For example, the American history of black slavery is often taught from a 'white' point of view.) So if this history validates your race's achievements and actions, that can be considered a bias. Western people are often commended and lionized in literature and media.

• Police generally don't think I look like a criminal and they're disinclined to harass or harm me. I can go on airlines without being suspected of being dangerous or a terrorist.

• The people in my profession are predominantly white and have a similar middle-class background. This likely helps me get work done and helps me advance.

• A fair number of Asian women want to date and marry me. Don't ask me why, but it appears to be a thing for them.

• Will let you know when I discover more...

Ask someone who supports reparations. Also just throwing money at a problem isn’t always a good thing.

I feel this is a fitting place to post this thought.

When the incident happened between Westbrook and the Utah fan this year, I wasn't actively posting. Shortly after the fan incident, I read online a second fan had been banned too.

I cringed and thought about what this other fan said to get banned. I got on YouTube and searched for the video and I came across a vlog post that showed what the fan said. I can't remember exactly what the video was titled, but it was something along the lines of Incredibly Racist Utah Fan - Unacceptable.

I watched the video and I was kind of confused. The guy called the player boy and all I could think was this is a bit of an overreaction. In fact, I typed out a comment and right before I hit enter, I decided to Google is calling someone boy racist.

After googling it, I did in fact find that calling someone boy is racist and it's history. I'm so glad I took one more step before I posted my comment.

I went back to the video and read the comments. Sure enough, someone posted the same question. I noticed the responses to the question were mean, condescending, and filled with hate. This made me feel bad.

I'm 35-years-old, and I had no idea calling someone boy was racists. People's reactions online towards something like this is to call the person ignorant and or privileged. Yeah, sure, those are possibilities. But instead of attacking someone because they have a different perspective, reality, life, experience than you, why are people not prone to educate others online? There's so much toxicity and mob mentality online.

After this all happened instead of feeling dumb or ignorant that I didn't know what boy meant, I felt a sense of happiness not knowing it. To me, this racist saying never caught traction in my surroundings or my upbringings and was long forgotten or never known. That's a silver lining to me.

Good post. I had a similar reaction
I had no clue it was considered racist. Then I tried thinking of how I could even possibly know it was. I dont recall ever seeing it used that way in movies and had never heard it IRL. I was grateful for those who politely made me aware.

He's a rich famous person.

Who, basically, had to pay $10k and do, what was it, 600 hours of community service? I mean, that's not 10 years in prison, but for someone who had no criminal record who basically just filed a false police report, it's not unreasonable.

It’s also happened in a country of the 3/5s compromise. A notion that set blacks as less than a man.

Ok...

This doesn’t address the point of his post.

Just that, yes, he has privilege, but people try to say that he's been treated with kid gloves because he's black. Nope, it's because of these other things.

Ok. Cool

To me the point of his post is his conclusion. “The demand for racism should upset us all”.

Sorry. I cant do the all or nothing white privilege thing.

Surely not every white person experiences white privilege, right? I tried to ask One Brow about this before but could never get to the bottom of it. He just danced around the issue.

There is nuance, or different levels to this isnt there?

In what way does this white man have a better life than this black man? 72f0b558bbbf95129ecfb7b7a11d7751--inspirational-speakers-motivational-speakers.jpg 390fd040375335a6104cc9de92da291f.jpg

Don’t point to extreme situations as the norm. Just like not all abortions are because of life endangerment.

It’s a factually and logically weak argument.

Well, but that doesn't exist. At least, not in the sense that he seemed to mean it. There are obviously those who try to instill racism so that they're not lonely. But 99.9% of black people who say they were attacked because they were black probably were.

Dont dodge the question. The extreme example was to demonstrate that things arent equal. I could post a white guy with no arms but has legs up against a Royce O'neal and that example is extreme still, but not as much. So the spread is smaller. Where does it meet or where does the white privilege kick in?

What the hell does white privilege even mean if the guy with no arms and no legs doesnt even have it, and he is white?

Who has white privilege? All white people? Some white people? A few white people?

I say its a few white people. And i say there is black privilege too. See Jussie Smollett. Thats proof. You can choose to ignore if you want.

And here we differ. I’m a white male. I’m as white as the driven snow. And I can think back to several occasions I have seen an expression of a demand for racism.

Like when my female Navajo coworker was accused of racism against Native Americans by a Navajo woman. All because my coworker refused to break the law. The demand for racism does exist because it’s a convenient scapegoat and justification for failure, being ill prepared, laziness and what not. And I’ve seen it used by whites as often as any other group.

I’ll agree that the majority of people that say they were the victim of racism were. But the % is an unknown. And it’s ebough to warrant looking at every case by the details

Post a question that’s worth answering and not built on a ******** extreme premise

Post a question that’s worth answering and not built on a ******** extreme premise

You cant beat my logic. That's why you wont answer.

I dont even have to use an extreme example. Just an ordinary example.

White guy, no dad. Grew up very poor. In and out of jail. Got addicted to heroin. Overdoses. Has health problems. Dies at 25.

Black guy. Grew up in above average household income status. College paid for. Both parents. Becomes an engineer and has 4 kids. Has a good life. Lives to 89

Does the white guy still have some unfair advantage over the black guy.

Or are you going to tell me that scenario could never exist?

Or is it just easier to not think about how different things are from one person to the next?
