2020 Presidential election

I care about a candidate who can BEAT Trump more than one that gets under his skin.

Believe me, the same here. I want the candidate with the best chance to beat Trump. And Trump, justified or not, thinks that candidate might be Biden. Maybe he would clobber Biden, I don't know. He is the incumbent, the economy seems to be on his side, and we can probably expect multiple state actors interfering this time around. So I suspect Trump will be tough to beat. We shall see....

People don’t have concerns over the ages of Trump, Biden, and Sanders?

I guess in a country so stupid and intellectually lazy that we deny the benefits of vaccines, ignoring the obvious just makes sense.

This job is the hardest in the world. We’re entering some pretty precarious times with Russian and Chinese nationalism on the rise. Why aren’t the pressures of the presidency and their advanced ages more of a concern?

Biden's age is definitely a factor in me not wanting him to be the Democratic nominee. Not the only factor, but it is a factor.

Sanders is age and general lack of realistic ideas. He would get NOTHING done as President. He's not the right guy for the job for a lot of reasons.

But you know, Warren isn't likable enough... Because that's how we decide who should be President.

So far I like Buttigieg. Warren has actually started growing on me a little, too.

Pretty big no on Sanders and Biden.

I'm in wait and see mode on the rest of the field.

I love Warren. She’s the smartest of the candidates policy-wise. Whether the media will give her a chance is another question. Cable news seems obsessed with labeling Warren, “too Hillary-like.” Which is absurd.

The challenge for democrats is how best to excite their base?

I’m not a Bernie bot. Beto is way too Green. I like Warren. Biden is meh and I think his record on civil rights and women could backfire. But democrats need to play to their base and try to overwhelm Trump’s base. We know republicans will vote in 2020 because their entire outrage machine will be geared to stir them to anger. Will democrats provide them with a candidate, like another Obama, to get excited over? Who is that candidate?

Good post. I like how Sanders has brought economic issues to the forefront. But I’m not a fan of his “plans” if you can even call them that. They’re not realistic. Even less when you consider that republicans will still hold the senate in 2020.

It’s not just Biden’s age but Trump’s and Sander’s too. These dudes are old! The job is tough on people. Bush and Obama seemed to age 30 years in their two terms each. Watch this interview and tell me whether Trump has lost a step or two:

He even uses complete sentences for crying out loud! Crazy

Democrats need a candidate who will excite their base. Unless I’m mistaken, their base is more urban population centers, minorities, and women.

I say forget trying to win over Joe Sixpack at some rural Pennsylvania diner. The rural white non-college voter is gone. I might even agree that white suburban voter is gone too (and this is coming from a white male from the burbs). Sadly, for a variety of reasons, many whites in the burbs aren’t open about voting democratic unless they already have a history with the party.

Focus on the base and try to “out flood” Trump.

She's probably a lil more than 1/1024 like Hillary which is still absurd to compare.

I don't like his handout ideology, but Andrew Yang is pretty likable or no?

I'm sure he has no chance to be a candidate of a party, but he's a likable guy talking politics. I disagree with his policies, but he's not a **** about them.

Yang has all the charisma of a wet paper towel. I love his ideas, though.

Yang has the charisma of a wet paper towel? The guy's tag line is "the opposite of Donald Trump is an Asian who is good at math" lol.

Yang's a long shot but I tell you he's a breath of fresh air - he doesn't play identity politics, you know exactly where he stands on the issues (the policy page on his website would take you literally about a day to read) he's gone on Fox and Ben Shapiro's Sunday Talk and he's more than held his own.

Most importantly he's willing to face the tough questions - like what is going to happen when we start replacing millions of jobs with AI and automation. And that speaks to the millions of people in middle America that got Donald Trump elected in the first place.

As far as his "hand-out" is concerned - we already live in a welfare state. There are over 60 federal entitlement programs that costs billions of dollars a year just to administer - his plan would consolidate them into a handful.

I hadn't actually watched anything from him in a few months, probably his first campaign video. I just watched an interview from MSNBC (just googled his name and found the first decent video link) and he's definitely gotten better. Again, I think a UBI (or, as he calls it, Freedom Dividend) is a necessity if we actually care about our fellow citizens. I'm not so sure that we, as a country, actually do.

Nothing would stir Trump supporters to come out in droves to re-elect their guy more than giving Joe Biden the ticket. Not only is he seen as a wishy washy establishment lackey, he was the Vice President under Obama. The last thing Dems want to do is harken back to the Obama administration that got Trump elected in the first place.

Presidential candidates are marketed. Like any other product. And marketing means slinging the bull, mischaracterizing rivals, etc. We do indeed decide, at least many do, based on emotional responses, and the campaigns that market their candidates understand that. So they aim to make their brand, their product, likeable, and through negative ads, make all those other brands unlikable. Come campaign season, all politicians running for office, or vying for nominations, are products to be marketed.
