What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Tobias is still young, and he'll get another contract. A 3+1 max as a second option might be worth it to him. He could be an UFA again at 30 (his birthday is in mid-July) and could get a 5 year max at that point. A 5 year max right now puts him back into free agency at 32 and probably minimizes his next contract if he's still their 4th option. That's got to be a huge consideration for him.

It's definitely a legit selling strategy to him imo. I don't know that he gets a five year max at 30 but could sign another big deal... especially if he was on a team that allowed him to get more scoring opportunities. I really think you could point to what we did with Gordon and say think about what we could do with you. Taking a 5 year max and getting traded to New Orleans, Minnesota, Sacramento in 6 months and not realizing his potential as a player may lead to less career earnings and a lower nba legacy/status. Gordon left mostly because he wanted to get individual recognition and status... maybe we can really play up that side of the appeal here. Maybe because we are Utah we still can't offer that because he still may not get the shine.

I think we have a shot with him... hopefully the message resonates.

If Ben doesn't get serious about having some sort of range, he also could lose a ton of value.

Yes, but I also wonder if the team was built around him what he could do... could he be Giannis light if the team went empty post and played him as a PF or Center?

I just think those two are a tough fit and the issue is Ben will be an all-star level player for 10 years... like a top 30 guy... Embiid will be a top 5 guy when healthy, but maybe only has a few years left. Ben is the safe play...Embiid is the championship play... GMs are generally on the safe side. There are some tough calls there, but if I could get something really good I would move Ben.

How about that Rivers kid who was nailing 3 pointers left and right during the playoffs this year? Seems to be a good choice to add to our roster for 3 point shooting and such! Would probably come fairly cheap, as well!
Yyyyaaaaa, not a shooter. He’s had two decent shooting years, this last year he shot 31% and has at least two three years of shooting less than 30%. He just got hot like everyone vs the jazz.

Giannis Light isn’t that hard to guard IMO.

Coming down hill with an empty post with his passing and shooters surrounding the perimeter? He’s a better passer than Giannis and a better ball handler. I think he could be pretty tough to guard... he needs to get something that resembles a jumper but the dude is a good player. He’s a total douche but he’s a good player.

That's what I've thought about Harris is that he essentially fills in the GH role but at the 4.

I’ve been thinking about this same exact thing. He’s a perfect fit on offense and we have the roster to make up for whatever defensive shortcomings (but he’s not a disaster [hell, maybe he’s a small-ball 5 in a switch-everything scheme?]).

He would open up everything for the team, regardless of the PG moves.

Good three point shooter, can run pick and roll, great in the mid-range (we are seeing this is very important in the playoffs when efficient offense is tough to find).

I know why he didn't get the ball yesterday... but isn't that part of what Philly needed?

Not a small ball 5 though. I think he could put up an efficient 23-25 pts in our offense with the opportunities we could give him.

Watching the playoffs is eye opening... Quin is such a good coach... I don't know how our offense was good enough to make the playoffs with the offensive talent deficit we have. Let's get him something to work with.

Hayward was really good here. Watching him play in Boston I've wondered how much was him and how much was the system. I know he isn't himself, but what if we had Tobias from the start... would he have put up similar numbers and developed into an all-star?

I don't think Harris is the only missing piece to the championship puzzle but he gives us a lot of what we need.

I think that's part of the problem, though. It's like that guy at work who's doing an awesome job covering for 2-3 different people, but it's not sustainable and you need to get him some help, even though it looks awesome how much work you're getting done by going lean. Quin has stretched our offensive far beyond what we have (nothing, essentially), which has masked how big of a need that really is and facilitated a pretty large degree of neglect.

This kind of hits on my issues I have with DL... there has been some low hanging fruit that could have made a big difference and we haven’t taken it.

Alright Zanik... fix it.

Listening to Rights to Ricky Sanchez podcast is sooooooo fun today though.

Yeah, but what if he just doesn’t have a shot? The fact that he’s this far into his life and he’s this bad, and he doesn’t even appear to try to address it, what makes anyone think he’s even going to have a shot to work on?

Very good point. I think he could still be effective but the thing has to be built around him... and it has a definite ceiling.

He is a bad enough FT shooter that hacking him in a pressure situation is a viable strategy. Again, he’s barely adequate shooting FREE THROWS.

Harris would be perfect. We all start disagreeing after him though.

I'd love to have Harris... but he's second on my list. Kemba is the best fit because we have Crowder who can be a high-level starter at PF. If we sign Harris.... the point guard situation doesn't have a clear answer.
