What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Um... because then we wouldn’t have a starting PG?
Is there some NBA rule that I don't know about that doesn't let the jazz sign Rubio to another contract? Did Rubio retire?

Also, he could start neto, or Exum, or DM, or Grayson, or draft a point guard and start whoever that is, or start Ingles.

There are more quality free agents available this summer than any summer I have ever seen. Half the league is a free agent. Less than half of the NBA teams have as much money as we have.

If we run it back with the same roster plus a rookie, we might as well put the team up for sale. We don't have ambition. We are fine with just being a playoff team.

I'm not saying that's what we will do, but if that happens, shame on DL.

We will see the true intentions of ownership this off season. Will be interesting.

DM is the best pg on the roster and one of the best in the nba if given the keys to the position this year.

If the Jazz are going to stubbornly stick with Exum they better tell that dude to come back from summer looking shredded. Odds are he would injure himself working out, but he needs to build some serious strength if hes gonna have any shot at being healthy through an NBA season.

He's the very definition of shredded. ACL, shoulder, patellar tendon, other stuff, etc. We should call him Shredder.

Guess what? Signing Rubio would be... ready for it .. a MOVE. Stop being a clown man.

Is there a rule that says he can't start a different player on the roster who is currently under contract?

And with some sort of consistent shot. He can hit them occasionally but needs to do it more regularly. Then he wouldn’t have to drive all the time and come crashing down.

Ok man, we’ll start Neto. Actually no, let’s start Greyson. That’s the ticket. You’re so right. Serious question... How old are you?
I feel like I would start DM. He is pretty good and the jazz record with him starting at point guard is amazing.

Weird that you would choose Grayson and neto over Donovan but to each their own.

So, calling me a clown then using sarcasm. And you wonder about my age lol. Carry on

I've finally gotten around to listening to the Ben Dowsett podcast with DL.

Spends a lot of time talking about punting on good opportunities. Talks about not overpaying guys in free agency. Talks about flexibility. Talks about building a team the way SA did over the long-haul, which I think is a flawed model with how the CBA and contracts are these days. We will see what happens. Starts talking about some of that stuff around 27 minutes.

You’re something else. You’re the one that mentioned Neto and Greyson and Ingles, and a draft pick?! as possible starting PG options - not me. Clearly you weren’t being serious (or were you??) - I hope you weren’t, because that’s just plain dumb. And that’s why I said stop being a clown.

DM as a starting PG? Yes. I’ve always been on that train. Still, that would be a decision - a move - on DL’s part.

So, I’ll say it again... this isn’t like last year where we could just run it all back again... this time DL LITERALLY has to make a move.

Are we done now?

When I listened to his pod I thought "I'll bet @infection wouldn't love this". A lot of "value based" talk. Just gave me the impression he may not pivot to second tier guys if we miss on the Tobias, Dlo types... like they are overly concerned with getting value and FA isn't a place you find a lot of value contracts unless it is guys like Royce... generally you are overpaying for the production you will get.

I was being serious when I said that he could start neto and Grayson and the rest. That is a fact. He can.
Your post was saying they should (sarcastically) which I disagree with.

We could run it back. We would make the playoffs again and have a decent shot at homecourt in round 1 and getting in to the 2nd round of the playoffs. That wouldn't be the worst think ever.

I was just pointing out that he doesn't literally have to make a move. He doesn't have to. He should and almost certainly will though.

Carry on.

So it's June 10, and here is my new plan of action:

MOVE #1: trade #23 and Korver to Miami for #13 and Olynyk. Draft the guy we like best between Doumboya, Hachimura and Clarke. I vote Doumboya.

RESULT: this means the end of the Derrick Favors era in Utah. Tough decision, but doing this during the draft is the quick bandaid pull. Olynyk has range, tenacity and could be a great PF/C for us. He's not the club legend Favors is, but he should be an adequate replacement with range who is scheduled to make $6 million less than Favors next season. Even with adding #13 and Olynyk, we still have near max cap space available.

MOVE #2: try to sign Tobias. If he agrees to come here (I personally don't think he will), we are a few minor moves (waive Niang, waive Neto, etc.) away from getting him his $32.7 max deal. If not Tobias, try to sign Kemba. If not Kemba, try to sign Russell. We can sign Russell without having to make any additional moves.

RESULT: I think we have a great shot of getting Russell. If he becomes an unrestricted free agent because the Nets renounce him, not many teams are lining up to give him a max. If we do, and Mitchell is part of the in person sales pitch, I think we got him. If we don't get Russell...

MOVE #3: sign Beverley. Or Rozier. Or trade for Conley. Get the best PG we can get our hands on.

RESULT: we get a SF/PF with potential who fits the long term goals of the franchise. Whether it's Hach, Doum or Clarke, I think we get a great player who is locked up for the long term. I'm also very high on Olynyk as a fit here. Ideally, we get Russell and we are set at PG for a long time. If we don't, at least we leave this summer with that good young player at SF/PF. And the last time we drafted somebody at #13, we did pretty well...

I kind of took that to mean you wouldn't offer the max to a guy like Tobias. Of course, you could argue that this is the kind of thing he has to say publicly, but his track record is consistent with current narrative. So I guess we'll just look forward to "more bites at the apple."
