What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Somebody tell me if this line of thinking is way off or not:

Jazz agree to trade Exum, Korver, Bradley, Crowder, and #23 to Memphis for Conley. Trade is agreed to, but isn't finalized until after free agency.

Jazz guarantee Favors, Neto, O'Neale, and Niang. They rennounce Rubio, Thabo, Udoh. Because the above trade hasn't gone through yet, they have approximately $14 million in cap space. They use the rest of this cap space to sign someone like a Niko, etc.

Jazz finalize the trade with Memphis

Because they're now over the cap, the Jazz also can use the $9 Million dollar MLE to get another impact player
If you go over the cap then you don’t have the MLE but the room exception, which is like $3.9, which can get you Caruso.

I thought it was if you are over the cap but under the luxury tax cap? Jazz aren't going over the luxury tax level in any situation that I have seen. But I could definitely be wrong on this.

You're thinking of the tax-payer MLE. If you go over the cap, meaning using your cap space, you have a smaller exception to exceed the cap. Looks like it's actually a shade under $5M.

#LockeWatch: "The more I talk to people around the league, the more I think about things I'm guessing a large portion of what the Jazz do this off-season is going to be done PRIOR to July 1st"

-Jazz want talent upgrade - significant interest in doing it at PG
-less of an interest of doing it at PF if you can keep Favors.
-slight upgrade at PF? if you keep Favors (i.e. what Locke did in the mock draft - TRADE THE FIRST ROUNDER for player who cannot stay on the floor in the playoffs!!!!)
-Kemba is probably not possible - he's not leaving supermax to come to Utah, also has options for NY and LA...
-Jimmy Butler - probably not interested in
-Middleton - not likely - MKE probably going to pay him
-Harris - if Butler leaves PHI, Harris is going to stay, but if he leaves, there are lots of of other options for him
-he seems to think the Jazz don't have much of a chance with the FAs above
-the only options left - Russell and Conley
-He's heard Russell and PHX are tied together and likely destination for DLo
-if you can, why not just do Conley deal now then? That's the safe route. if you can do it without losing Favors, is it even more appealing?

So in essence - Locke is selling the security of getting Conley and not risking being left empty-handed. I hate this mode of thinking so ****ing much. It's the exact frame of mind that has us in the position we are - keep picking the safest route with the highest floor and keep avoiding taking chances just so you don't end up in the worst case scenario.

So basically the Jazz don't believe any of their free agent targets are going to sign here so they know they need to upgrade the roster through a trade. With our lack of assets Conley is by far the best player we can hope to acquire in a trade so if we can't get him I think we're in trouble.

We are getting a little dramatic here. Yes, Conley might be the best player we can trade for. However, we can still trade for one of the following guys who would help us out too:

- DeMar DeRozan
- Goran Dragic
- Andrew Wiggins
And a bunch of lower level guys who can help us out (Joe Harris, Josh Jackson, Ilyasova, etc.).

Yes, Conley would make us better but some of you have to be prepared for other options. If Conley to Utah was a done deal, it would probably be done by now. Have you ever seen our FO so publicly talked about in a trade scenario and that scenario actually ended up happening?

So if D'Lo isn't linked to the Suns, and Indy is wanting to sign Ricky, and Brooklyn is renouncing D'Lo... who else is competition to sign him? Dallas? I guess if the Conley trade goes through we will see what the FO values more. Conley is certainly better than D'Lo right now, but it is another stopgap short term solution at PG. I think if we trade for Conley there's more wiggle room as to who we can keep on the roster. Sure seems like this trade is going to happen. Way too much smoke not to...

That's what we thought at the trade deadline...

I think the Grizz getting the 2 pick changes a lot. I'm still going back and forth if I want this to happen or not. I think Conley is better than D'Lo and a better fit and leader. But I think waiting it out and signing a free agent like D'Lo or Harris could really change the perception of the franchise. And as a fan it would just be exciting to see. Either way I think we're going to come out with a really good player.

Over the years I've continued to insist that we repeat this desert mirage phenomena indefinitely, cycling through the draft, free agency, and the trade deadline. We have some asset that we tell ourselves will be more valuable at ____ point, and then when that comes and goes, we simply insert whichever deadline is next and rationalize how we'll have that much more flexibility and purchasing power when we get there. Then that comes and goes and we say "FOR SURE" this time we'll make a move at the next deadline. I'm waiting for the "oh, Favors is going to be such a valuable expiring chip at the deadline" discussion.

Memphis could just be leaking this again to try and get the Jazz to overpay. You're right, where's the competition for D-Lo? Seems like the Jazz are a pretty damn good fit for him at this point.

Honestly though, if DLo is SERIOUSLY considering the Suns, I think that is enough warning bells that I likely want no part of him on a Max. That is a dude looking for the most amount of money with the least amount of accountability. I'm not sure how much detail there is in that "story" other than "He's buds with Booker and liked an instagram post soooooo. . ." which is the state of NBA punditry today.

Bruh... DeRozan will cost as much or more than Conley in a trade... those other players aren’t on conleys level... not even on the level below conleys.

Look he’s trying to tell us not to do it... weed in the Arizona can... wanting to go to Phoenix... he’s not what we need.

Would Houston include picks to get off Paul? If so, how many? Also, how many would it take for people here to say yes?

Of course he's pissed, Harden almost burned down his house then denied EVERYTHING! I'd want out too.

Lol... that’s a dick move... good thing Oscar took care of him... word is they called him in to mediate.

There’s nothing they could give that would make me want Chris Paul. Their picks will be trash and he’s ALREADY starting to slow down. That contract is going to be an anchor wherever he’s at.
