How To Use Burks' TPE

We have a $3.9 million traded player exception from the Burks/Korver deal. It expires in November. This thread is to discuss ideas on how to use that exception.

Remember, this exception cannot be added to any player or any other exception in order to make it a better deal. It can only be used to take a player or players that have value up to $3.9 million. Also, we couldn't use this until AFTER the Conley deal goes through. The finances of the Conley deal will go into affect on July 6.

My short list:

DJ Wilson ($2.9) - the Bucks might look to dump as much salary as possible since they have so many guys they need to re-sign

Guershon Yabusele ($3.1) - Boston will look to wheel and deal. Supposedly, he would be available if Boston needs to dump contracts.

Denzel Valentine ($3.38) - seems to have fallen out of favor in Chicago. Wonder if he would be available for a 2nd rounder.

Juancho Hernangomez ($3.3) - decent, versatile big who Denver might cut loose if they are looking to shed contracts.

Thon Maker ($3.57) - once again, does Detroit move a young guy to make some extra cap room. Highly unlikely, but you never know.

Nene ($3.8) - he's a seasoned vet who has a ton of experience. We might even pick up a 2nd rounder or two by taking his contract from dumpster fire Houston

Mo Wagner ($2) or Isaac Bonga ($1.42) or Both - the Lakers are looking to shed contracts. If they throw us some future 2nd rounders, these guys are probably worth it. They might be worth it by themselves.

Dario Saric ($3.48) - probably the dream scenario. Would likely cost us a 1st, but it would be worth it if we are going all in.

Skal Labissiere ($2.34) - maybe Portland moves him for savings and a 2nd.

I had forgotten about that.

Also, why the big gap between Nene and Mo Wagner?

Thanks for pointing this out and how this can be used.
Saric would be nice.
Wagner also seems to be okay.

Do we have any draft compensation left to package to get any of these guys? Presumably these teams aren’t just going to give us a player.

Saric would be beyond a dream to land. Not sure we could even offer a 1st after giving up 2 in the last deal.

I really like the upside of Skal. He could turn into a solid player in a few years.

Juancho would be nice but I dont think Denver answers the phone for us anymore, lol.

Thats a solid list though. I hope we actually use it.

Could we use this to get over the salary cap before FA after the Conley trade goes through so we can use the full MLE? Edit NM that wont work.

Valentine would be a dream but he's too good for Chicago to let go for a 2nd. I also wouldn't mind to have a roster spot open toward the end of the season when teams are waiving rotation players who can help us.

We gotta stop hemorrhagic our liquid assets at some point. Anyone that fills this basically needs to give us assets or not cost us any. Cuz we’re running out of them.

Nene and Wagner make a lot of sense to me as fitting the bill. But that’s also because I don’t see how this can be our team when there’s a ~$17 million elephant in the room that’s a center.

As far a combination of most likely to occur, and what I'd value: I'd be all over DJ Wilson. We're losing Grayson, but can maybe recoup this by picking up someone we were interested in the prior draft.

And thanks for starting this thread! It's a useful thing nobody has been talking about.

Thanks man. If we keep Favors at $17+, we really will only have $4.7 million, minimum contracts, 2nd round picks and this trade exception. We have to maximize this.

OK, scratch the most likely to occur. I'd still quickly take him if an opportunity opened, but I don't think the Bucks are trying to get rid of his salary. It sounds like just Snell's and Ersan's.

Also Bird rights on our current players, at least the ones we don't have to rescind in order to get far enough under the cap to do the Conley trade.

A TPE only exists as long as the team is over the cap. I believe that when Rubio's contract (and Thabo et al) comes off the books on 1 July, we go under the cap, and this TPE vanishes. Also, we cant use the TPE before then if the incoming salary would keep us over the cap, as we can only make the Conley trade if we are under the cap.

Sure? You are right we need to be over the cap, but we get there with the Conley deal. Every TPE I've ever seen is date determined not cap/luxury determined.

Dang, looks like you are right. From the FAQ,

"A team's exceptions may be lost entirely, or the team may never receive them to begin with. This happens when their team salary is so low that when the exceptions are added to the team salary, the sum is still below the salary cap. If this happens when the exceptions arise on July 1, then the team doesn't get their exceptions at all. If the team salary ever drops below this level during the year, then the unused portions of any remaining exceptions are lost (and do not return if the team salary later increases)."
