What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Remember Steph's ankles and Tim Duncan's knees turning to dust? There are plenty of examples of "injury prone" players turning out OK, especially as they grow into their adult bodies. I think the Jazz have been very, very cautious with Exum, which I appreciate. I'm not going to fault them for that.

The Jazz have all but treated him like the Mona Lisa being transported to an underground bunker. I appreciate it, but he's a stiff breeze away from a broken back until proven otherwise. There is a certain amount of randomness involved, but some folks are just not built for their game for one reason or another. Exum is quickly sliding into the latter.

Again, that's not his fault and he does get a fair amount of undeserved criticism (from me among others). As I understand, he's a nice guy and I hope like hell it's all just a fluke. History should never be taken as an indication of future performance. That said, it does provide baselines from which to draw educated conjecture.

I like to think about a guy like Doug Christie. Started out with lots of injuries in his first four years in the league, before carving out a very solid career. He was 26 when he hit his stride. Dante is only 23. I still have hope.

Here's a risky one... Josh Jackson is reportedly done in PHX, they want him gone... would you do Exum for Josh Jackson and Elie Okobo? Jackson has issues... would you take the risk on him?

If that's true then Exum should play like 1000 straight games so that is good news.

Some dudes just aren't built for NBA basketball. While I agree injuries are somewhat random there have been many dudes that just can't stay on the floor.
That is true, some people cant hold up. The vast majority of those people are players with chronic injuries, out of shape, or are way bigger than they should be like Yao.

Exum could be a player that cant hold up. But he could also just have had bad luck. If these injuries were more spaced out no one would really care. I would be more concerned if they were to the same area. The most recent one was the most concerning. The shoulder one was a complete bad luck and just sucked for him. The ACL sucked as well but I think that one was positive for his training. He came back much stronger.

Good news is that he will get much stronger and more explosive over the next 7+ years of his life.

I agree they have been very cautious. Exums injuries are different then those guys though. Steph had repeated injuries to the same place, not Exum.

LOL, No. Snyder would literally end up killing Josh Jackson. The we would lose the slot and a pretty good coach, assuming a jury would convict him.

I'd actually be more worried if all of the injuries were in the same spot. An ACL and his shoulder injury caused by idiotic contact don't worry me at all. We just witnessed with KD why the Jazz held Exum out for the rest of the season with his latest injury. I think had Exum been in shape for the entire season previous, they could have done something different. They were right to shut him down and have him ready for the tip off this year. Also, they have the greatest idea of where he really is as a player. If they are holding him back, I assume they know what they are doing.

If you believe a 10 million dollar contract is "crippling" a franchise, you really need to get out more. And you better not be one of the people wanting to give Mirotic 17 million. . .

Jazz won't touch Jackson... he has some potential legal issues and isn't worth the trouble anyway.

Would I? Yes. Would our FO? No. I still have faith Exum can be good, but I think Okobo and Jackson can too.

I think we trade Exum for one of two things - proven player OR cap space. This trade idea is neither.

Part of me turned on Exum so that I don't get my hopes up for a breakout only to watch something ****** happen or for him to play bad. Kind of like a reverse jinx. With Conley and DM there is less pressure to perform... I will still count anything we get from him as a found money (either on the court or in trade).

I wish we would have negotiated that deal a little harder and it was closer to 6-7M or he was non-guaranteed in the final year...

To be fair I tried to sneak up Okobo onto our roster more than Josh Jackson :D

I agree but the contract is a big overpay imo. Guy like that should be someone who rewards us with future decent play for even keeping him in the NBA and having faith for so long. He should be on 5 million right now.

Fair enough. I wish they had got an extra year on the deal as a team option. But I am guessing Exums camp didnt want that and was betting on himself. They signed up to slightly above MLE deal since that is what a bunch of teams would have offered him IMO. I am guessing most of those would have been 4 year deals as well. But who knows, all a guessing game.

For the record I think the hate on Exum on this board has gone way overboard. It's kind of ridiculous to be fair. It's not like he goes out there and on purpose tears ligaments and breaks bones... He's had ****** luck throughout his career which has hampered his development. At this point he's probably missed way too much developmental time and has suffered way too much damage to ever become what he could have become had he stayed healthy, but lets hope he gets back and stays healthy, because with the pathetic depth we will have this season we will need him to provide important minutes for this team and he will almost certainly be on the team so you better get used to cheering him on.
For the record I have no ill will toward Dante Exum, and I don’t see why being frustrated with all that is factual would make it “hate”.

I still dont understand why people think it is so unreasonable for Tobias to accept around $29 million when max is $32.7. If he signed a 2 year deal with a 2nd year player option, he could decline and we could re-sign him for longer and more than a 2019-20 max next summer.

Can't we sign him for up to max or 120% of his previous year's salary? So if the cap jumps another $5-10 million for 2020 as anticipated, he will get his payday. His first year of his new 2020 contract could be around $35 million.

This says more about you as a human being than a talent evaluator.
