Did we take any steps back defensively?

It isn't a 1 v 1 type of deal. I think Favs was good next to Rudy... much better than Green will be... he doesn't get cooked on the perimeter like other bigs and gives you additional rim protection and rebounding.

Also we are swapping Bojan for Ingles in the starting lineup.

When you consider the whole one year sample I think we may end up being better. We seemed to struggle a bit to start the year because of all the fouls being called.... but our defensive ceiling will be lower. I think Ed is good on defense but not the rim protector Favs is. I think we take a half step back on defense unless DM has a big improvement. When you are taking 3 steps forward on offense the half step ain't a big deal.

But my mind has definitely wandered to that Bucks game in Jan/Feb when Gobert got absolutely destroyed by Giannis in historical fashion. Favors came in to save the day (the game Mitchell went nuts, probably game of the year). Bucks are the favorite to represent the East in the Finals. If that’s where we want the Jazz to be then we might miss Favors the most right when we’ve climbed so near the top of the mountain.

We lose 4 points on defense....but gain 8 points per game on offense! Plus, our shooting percentage will skyrocket....and we might just obliterate our already untouchable dunking record we broke last year! It's entirely possible that Rudy's baskets made will be 50% layups and 50% dunks!
 
We are better on defense this year. Rubio sucked on defense. Conley is a big upgrade. Mitchell is getting better and better at defense each year. Bogs is a good defender. Ingles will be back to form. He slumped a little. Crowder was overrated and Green is just as good or better. Gobert is getting better. Davis is close to as good as Favors on defense.

Conley, Ingles, and Bogs will all be worse on defense than previous years. It's called age.

And I'll be surprised if we are a top 5 offensive team.

A huge dynamic change is that Mitchell's volume scoring on meh efficiency won't look at good now that the Jazz have Conley and Bojan. He'll have to make a big step in being more efficient for the Jazz to come close to top 5. I think top 10 is a near certainty though.

If I had to be, I'd say like the 9th ranked offense and 2nd best defense.

Possibly with Ingles being the exception.

Many players get better at defense with age. It's a lot about technique and effort. Those tend to improve with age and motivation.

Either way Conley>>>Rubio at defense. Bog>Crowder at defense and Ingles=Ingles at defense.
 
I think the odds are not with you if you're betting that the Jazz will improve or maintain their position on defense without some pretty substantial improvements at the individual level (and no, I don't consider the Conley-Rubio change or any of the other changes we've made as such improvements). Elite team defense requires, among other things, superior chemistry and pieces that match well together (often aided by continuity). The Jazz have been pretty great at this the last couple of years.

The likelihood that we've improved on or will re-create this defensively by swapping some similar individual defensive talents is well less than 50%, I'd say. It could happen, but I think we're setting ourselves up for disappointment (and will be prone to trying to find a scapegoat) by thinking that we'll easily be just as good.

Less pressure = higher efficiency

I don't think we've seen enough of him to know if he's just a pure volume scorer or if he has just been doing the best he can with the entire focus of opposing defenses.

Have you not watched him the last two years? It's a big step to take. He's been a volume shooter/scorer his first two years.

Favors played 8-10 of his minutes in the starting lineup, and he was a pretty good perimeter defender. We should be so lucky to have Green as good as Favors there.
 
I think we will still be a top 3 defensive team. We were gassed every night from overcompensating on defense because our offense couldn't hit shots most of the time. I know it's going to suck not having Favors and Crowder, but if we're more efficient on offense we won't have to play reactive defense. Bogey wasn't the STRONGEST defensive player, but didn't the Pacers finish the year as the best defensive team? Bogey will work his *** off I'm sure and our defense will still be one of the best in the league.

I'm thinking we are in that ball park as well. Anywhere from 1st to 4th on D, 6th to 9th on O. Should win 55+ games and be a top 3 seed (in the whole league, not just the west) with those numbers.
