Same rules as last year.....

1. Post your final standings prediction for all 15 teams.

2.All predictions are frozen at first regular season game tip-off. Any changes are okay before then.

3. Your score is based on the net difference between your prediction and standings. For example, if you pick the Clippers to be first and they are in fourth, you receive 3 points for the Spurs. Low score wins.

4. Ranking is based on win% only.

5. Tied teams each receive an averaged score. For example, two teams tied for 5th/6th place are each scored as 5.5. Three teams tied for 10/11/12 are each scored as 11.

6. I'll post standings periodically through the season.

7. Please use the same acronyms and format as below. This makes my spreadsheeting easier.

Here are my preliminary picks to get the ball rolling (this will change before the season starts). While my brain says clippers 1 and Jazz 2, I'm sticking with my homerism only because I never want a reason to root against my guys.

1. UTA
2. DEN
3. LAC
4. HOU
5. SAC
6. DAL
7. GSW
8. NOP
9. LAL
10. SAS
11. POR
12. MIN
13. PHX
14. OKC
15. MEM

I unsuccessfully tried to pawn this off on Jazzfan4life, haha. If someone else wants to administer this contest, I'm happy to pass the baton.

Holy NOP, POR, and LAL!

Holy NOP, POR, and LAL!

yeah, I kinda agree my initial picks are pretty stupid : -)

POR lost a lot
NOP is rising
And I just hate the Lakers.

But after I look at all of this "logically" I'm sure my picks will change before tipoff

Subject to change:

1. HOU
2. LAC
3. DEN (Jokic will be serious MVP candidate)
4. UTA (I feel another slow start coming)
5. POR
6. LAL (injuries; bad defense)
7. DAL
8. SAS (I thought about putting them lower; I can see them selling off LMA or Derozan at the deadline)
9. GSW (no Klay this year. I don’t like their roster).
10. SAC
11. OKC (I’m betting they dump more pieces or I’d have them higher; Gallo will have suitors [maybe UTA])
12. MIN
13. NOP (8 weeks without Zion is a bummer)
14. PHX (I actually don’t hate this team... but it’s the West, and I can’t find an argument to elevate them in the standings).
15. MEM

This year is so hard. I think 1-3 will be really close, 4-7 close, and 8-12 will be close.

I'm not ready to submit my picks yet, as I think it's fairly challenging to figure this out because there are a number of teams that I could see having a pretty wide range to how they finish, but here are a couple of my preliminary thoughts:

Clippers: this is a team that has surprised last year. They were supposed to suck and they didn't. They were supposed to get worse after trading Harris and they didn't. They took that same 8th seed team and replaced the roles of Harris and Gallo with George and Kawhi? I think they'll have a really good regular season, regardless of load management.

Lakers: this is a team I could see having a big range in where they finish. I think their surrounding talent is better than advertised. I think they'll kinda be like the LeBron Cavs, where they can put together really good stretches and climb the standings, but still not really be as good as their record, or they can struggle but you know they're still in it.

Denver: I remain skeptical. I understand internal growth, but this was a team that missed the playoffs before this season. I believe their regular season record last year was more flukey.

OKC: I think this is a team that could surprise. They've been playing Westbrook ball and now have a bit more balance. Paul + Adams + Gallo can still win in stretches.

Portland: This team always seems to do better than expected. They did lose some good defensive pieces on paper. I just feel like they'll surprise again.

Houston: Again, they jettisoned Luc and Ariza last year while losing Bzdelik. They picked up Melo. They sucked. Luckily, they were able to turn it around on the defensive end after they brought back Bzdelik out of retirement. They've since fired him. Good luck. They're ****ed. They have enough individual talent to beat anyone on any given night, but they're ****ed.

Does OKC own their 1st rd pick for 2020? If so, I could see them blowing it up even more and gunning for the best odds for a 1-3 pick. I'd push them down to 14 if that were the case.

San Antonio is not missing the playoffs lol.
my initial ranking had them missing the playoffs. I think I was making too much out of the rumors that DeRozan is on-the-block. I've edited my ranks and put them in 8th... because I pretty much agree that you shouldn't be betting on Dallas, Sacramento, or Minnesota over them.

So Paul George may miss the first month of the season after having surgery on both shoulders this offseason. That's going to throw a wrench.
